American Dream Song

I chose the song Empire State of Mind for the way it relates to the American Dream in many ways. In the song, it goes, "...In New York Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothin' you can't do..." These lines describe how New York is the start of a lot of dreams. It's a sign for new beginnings and a better life. It also says, "...These streets will make you feel brand new, big lights will inspire you..." This shows how the big buildings and the atmosphere of New York inspires people to do better things. And know that big things are coming. The American Dream is a topic that is different for everyone. In my opinion, I think the American Dream is what this song is talking about.

Mice and Men Constructed Response

The Poem "To a Mouse" by Robert Burns relates to the novel "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck in many ways. First off, a whole part of Lennie's story in the novel revolves around Mice. How he finds comfort in them and in the end, as said in the fifth line of the poem, "leave us nothing but grief and pain." Lennie constantly ends up killing the mice in the novel. Also, in the novel, an ongoing theme is loneliness and how each character deals with it. The first line in the poem says, "But little Mouse, you are not alone." I think that the mouse Burns is referring to in Steinbeck's eyes is the different characters. Whether it is Crooks, Lennie, Curley's Wife, Candy, etc. They all resemble some sort of loneliness. For example, Crooks shows signs of loneliness by telling Lennie, "A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't make any difference who the guy is, long's he's with you. I tell ya, I tell ya a guy gets too lonely and he gets sick.” Crooks is excluded because of the color of his skin. No one spends time with Crooks. Another example of loneliness is shown through Curley's Wife when she also tells Lennie, "I get lonely,” she said. “You can talk to people, but I can't talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How'd you like not to talk to anybody?” This shows how she feels like she has no power and she feels lonely when she isn't allowed to talk to anybody. Steinbeck did a great job representing the feeling of loneliness throughout different characters in the novel. The poem by Burns resembles the same feeling of loneliness and how it feels and how it can affect people's behavior.
