The northern yellow river valley is green and grassy and the river is in fact yellow. Shi Class: Highest class, apart from the king. Made up of Gentry scholars. Even those who owned land weren’t very rich, but were respected for their knowledge.
Nong Class: Made up of peasant farmers. Were landholders, like some gentry scholars. Farmers paid land tax, and therefore were valuable members of society, even if they were not Shi.
Gong Class: The class of Artisans and Craftsmen. The Gong had the skills to make useful objects. Those that were the most successful could become wealthy enough to hire laborers. They also formed guilds.
Shang Class: Merchants and Traders inhabited the Shang class. Often seen as greedy or immoral, This class was not well respected. Some merchants even bought land to be considered farmers, and have more respect in society.
