1. The Thorny Devil can absorb water through its skin. There is a hinge joint between each scale that allows the lizard to collect water and transport it to the back of its mouth. The water is transported through a tubular system under its skin.
*This adaptation will be featured in the design.

2. When threatened by a predator, the Thorny Devil hides its real head and exposes a fake, spike-filled head. The lizard tucks its real head between its legs. The false head and thorny body makes the Thorny Devil look bigger and harder to shallow to potential predators.

3. Thorny Devils are covered in golden and brown patches. Their unique color allows them to blend in with their surroundings. The golden and brown patches blend in with the desert soil. This camouflage technique protects the Thorny Devil from predators.

4. Thorny Devils capture their food with their short, sticky tongues. They only eat ants. They typically eat between 1,000 and 3,000 ants in a single meal. Their sticky tongue allows them to capture multiple ants at a time.

Citations:

Nathan, A.
How The Thorny Devil Can Help Humans Do Something Better:

1. Humans can use the Thorny Devil's water absorbing skin adaptation to create products that will help them do something better. Humans can create a sponge that resembles the Thorny Devil's skin adaptation. This sponge will allow humans to absorb moisture in the air that is unwanted. Humans can use this sponge in their bathroom to absorb moisture/liquid to create a steam free bathroom.

2. Humans can create a protective helmet that resembles the Thorny Devils's spikes. The spikes are used to protect the Thorny Devil from predators. The helmet would be used to protect humans from harm. If a human was to wreck their bike, the spiky helmet would benefit humans because the spikes would be the target that is getting direct impact to the ground instead of their head.

3. Using the Thorny Devil's sticky tongue adaptation, humans can create a bug catcher. This bug catcher could go at the bottom of door cracks. It could be a small adhesive rectangle that gets placed between door crevices. The rectangle would be nothing but a sticky pad. This pad would catch all bugs or spiders that try to move across it. This bug catcher could be used anywhere, but the most ideal place would be under doors.

4. Replicating the Thorny Devil's tail, humans could create a gardening tool that is great for digging dirt or soil to plant. This tool could be long and skinny with spikes all over it. Humans could place the tool in the ground and begin moving it in a circular motion. By doing this, the dirt or soil will break up easier. There will then be a clear hole to drop the seeds into that humans are planting.

After taking a shower or bath, the bathroom accumulates steam. The steam accumulation can lead to a fogged up mirror, stains on the walls, and mildew growth. When the warm air from the shower mixes with cooler air in the bathroom, condensation forms on the bathroom surfaces. The problem I have at home is dealing with the negative effects of steam accumulation in the bathroom after a shower or bath.

Changes in Orignial Prototype:

1. The first prototype was designed as an egg shaped sponge. There were spikes along the outside of the sponge and rows of spikes on the top and inside of the sponge. The idea was that the rows of spikes would attract moisture/liquid and it would fall down the hills of the spikes and absorb into the sponge.

2. When creating my second drawing of the prototype, I decided to change the shape of the sponge. I designed the sponge to be circular. I left the spikes on the outside of the sponge. Instead of having spikes on the top and inside of the sponge, I created waves thinking that it would be easier for liquid/moisture to slide down and sink into the sponge.

3. My third drawing resulted in my final prototype. I decided to change the shape to a traditional sponge shape. This shape is more user friendly and allows the user to wring the sponge out easier. I also took away the spikes on the outside of the sponge because they didn't serve a purpose. I decided to incorporate individual spikes on the top of the sponge because moisture/liquid is able to roll down the spikes easier because they're steeper than the waves. Along with the spikes, I added four circular tubes on the end of the sponge. There are two tubes on one side and two tubes on the other side. The circular tubes will catch moisture/liquid and store it in the bottom of the sponge. I also added transport lines on top of the sponge. After the moisture/liquid falls from the spikes, the transport lines transport the moisture/liquid to one of the four circular tubes.

Final Product: The Spiky Sponge

The final product is called The Spiky Sponge. This sponge will eliminate negative effects of steam accumulation in the bathroom. It will help eliminate mildew growth, stains on the walls, and fogged up mirrors. All you have to do is place the sponge on your bathroom counter while taking a shower or bath. The sponge will use its spikes and circular tube system to absorb moisture in the air, leaving the bathroom steam free. The sponge is reusable for up to one week. It just needs to be wrung out after each use. After one week, the Spiky Sponge should be replaced with a new one. This product is sold as a pack of six. The Spiky Sponge six pack is sold for $4.99.
