Early Life

William Shakespeare was able to attend a good grammar school and the education was free there because his borough paid for the fees. His education consisted mostly of Latin studies. Here, he learned to read, write, and speak the language. Plus, he studied some of the Classical historians, moralists, and poets. When Shakespeare was a teenager, his family faced a hard time. His father got less involved with the town council and soon after the family’s wealth decreased. In 1582 when Shakespeare was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. For the next eight years, Shakespeare’s life is unknown. However, there are several stories that he went deer poaching, soldiering, and teaching. Although it is not proven, historians presume it took Shakespeare these years simply to get into the London theater and officially become an actor and playwright. His early connections to get into theatre is also unknown, although it is known that he became an actor before he started to be a playwright. Perhaps, he joined one of the touring companies that performed in his town, or he went to London to make his fortune and found his way to theatre.

- Over his career, Shakespeare invented thousands of words. He would combine Latin, French, and other roots to create new words. These words would be familiar enough for others to understand their meanings. Some of the words include “birthplace,” “dewdrop,” “radiance,” “watchdog,” and “blanket.” He also created phrases that we still use today, such as “break the ice,” “cold comfort,” “in a pickle,” “wild goose chase,” and “what’s done is done.”

- Shakespeare contributed to the grammar of the English language in the 17th and 18th centuries. As his work gained importance, correctly spelling words became more common. He created words and wrote them in the correct ways.

- Through his work, he expanded the idea of characterization, plot development, and genre. He was the first to connect romance and tragedy in a lasting way. He had a belief that tragedy required romance.

- Between about 1590 and 1613, Shakespeare wrote at least 37 plays and collaborated on several more. His early plays included Henry VI and its three parts. His success grew with Romeo and Juliet and following 10 history plays are Henry V , Richard III and more. Then he tried his hand in the tragic genre with plays including Julius Caesar (pr. c. 1599-1600) and Hamlet, MacBeth, etc. Shakespeare introduced tragicomedy. Shakespeare’s final plays are included Pericles, Prince of Tyre (pr. c. 1607-1608), Cymbeline (pr. c. 1609-1610), The Winter’s Tale (pr. c. 1610-1611), and The Tempest (pr. 1611).

- Shakespeare also wrote 4 poems of which he wrote during the time of the plague where he published two epic poems , Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece. He wrote a famous collection of Sonnets which was first published in 1609. The 154 sonnets dived into a romance, Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets published in his ‘quarto’ in 1609, covering themes such as the passage of time, mortality, love, beauty, infidelity, and jealousy. The first 126 of Shakespeare’s sonnets are addressed to a young man, and the last 28 addressed to a woman, a mysterious ‘dark lady’.

- Shakespeare had a partnership in one of the new reorganized companies, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men. Through this company, Shakespeare was able to earn money not only from the plays he had written or in which he acted but also from a share of the profits of every company performance. For many foreigners and residents they watched the plays because all of the components of the play brought it to life.

He wrote the blockbuster plays of his day - some of his most famous as seen being Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Hamlet.

Shakespeare was one of the first playwrights to bring the Renaissance's core values to the theater. He was involved in the Renaissance by updating the simplistic, two-dimensional writing style of the pre-Renaissance drama. He focused on creating human characters with complexity beyond imagination.

It has been almost 400 years since he died, but people still celebrate his work all around the world. He is still acted and enjoyed, the most widely studied and translated writer, the greatest poet and dramatist in the English and perhaps any language.
