Who were the Vikings?

The Vikings were ferocious warriors who often raided monasteries for their loot. They didn’t always raid; in fact they were great farmers. They didn’t actually wear horned helmets. The Vikings fought using long swords and axes. The Vikings didn’t need too much armour because they believed Odin (the god of war) would keep them safe.

Viking traders and explorers.

The Vikings traded all over Europe and Central Asia. They bought many items such as silver, wine, jewellery, glass and pottery. They also sold many items like honey, wool, wood and iron. Unfortunately, they also sold slaves.

They were great explorers and loved travelling. Sometimes they had to push their boats over land to get to the river. They did not use maps but sailed close to land to see the landmarks.

What were the Vikings like?

Vikings were strong warriors and great traders. They travelled far across the world just to trade and raid. They built strong longships to help them. They used the sail to move faster across the water

What was the Vikings battles like?

The Viking’s battled for nearly 300 years. Their battles were fierce and the Vikings trained hard to win. Unfortunately, many people died. The last major battle in England was in 1066. King Harold of England won the battle.

Who were the Vikings and what were they like?

The Vikings were warriors but they were also excellent at farming and crafting. They lived over a thousand years ago in Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden and Denmark). They sailed the seas from the late 700s to the 1000s. They attacked many countries and took away treasure. They were given the name of Viking, which means "pirate". They sailed in wooden ships called longships.

The gods they worshipped were warriors, too. Their chief god was called Odin.

Myth or fact?

Pictures of Vikings with horned helmets are common but there is actually no evidence that Vikings wore horned helmets. They wore helmets but they would have been a simple design to protect the head.

Viking traders and explorers

The Vikings were great explorers and travellers. Viking ships reached Britain, France, Spain, Italy and North Africa.

The Vikings were not only raiders attacking and stealing goods but also traders, swapping items and even enslaved people to gather goods which were very valuable.

Vikings is the modern name given to seafaring people originally from Scandinavia, who from the late 8th to the late 11th centuries raided, pirated, traded and settled throughout parts of Europe. They also voyaged as far as the Mediterranean, North Africa, the Middle East, Greenland, and Vinland

The Vikings were great explorers and travellers. Viking ships reached Britain, France, Spain, Italy and North Africa. Traders made long journeys overland through Russia, reaching as far south as Constantinople in modern-day Turkey. Some merchants traveled further east to Baghdad in Iraq. In the 8th century most Vikings lived by farming, grazing animals, hunting and fishing, whether in villages, isolated farms or on large estates. The whole family tended the farm and the entire household ate and slept together. Large estates included outbuildings for cooking, brewing, and craftwork. The Vikings, like the Anglo-Saxons, fought on foot (not horseback) and in battle formed a 'shield-wall' where they locked together side-by-side, shields in front, and pushed their enemy back until they broke up. There were no prisoners taken in these battles.
