Live
The a+a of live shows how living has become part of their daily lives. This shows how much their lives have changed. From luxury to not knowing if you will live or die tommorow. This could be related to the theme of ¨spend every moment as your last", because all the kids want to do is live. "You can save yourself. You can be anyone you want to be now." pg. 80. This shows theme because it shows that when you are free, you can be anything.

Babies symbolize new beginnings and, like the books title, Unwinding is like starting a new life as a divided being. It can also tell of new beginnings for stroked families that have to deal with that baby for the rest of their life.

On page 55, it shows how babies can bring new beginnings to families by saying, "As she hurries down the street, she thinks how wonderful it is that she can get a second chance. How wonderful it is that she can dismiss her responsibility so easily."

The Unwinds kept telling the story of Humphee dumphee. They said that he was an Unwind but his parents wanted him back, so they have been trying to put him back together ever since. When the Admiral took Emby he said that his last name was Dumphee. After that he said on pg. 241 "He allows himself a brief moment off satisfaction, glancing over at the smiling picture of his son Harlan, better known as Humphrey in modern folklore , but those who loved him know his real name.
Nathan Rublaitus

I think the theme of the story is that everyone deserves a second chance. I know that because of page 225 when the Admiral said ""As one of the fathers of the Unwind Accord, I was expected to set an example," he presses his thumb and forefinger against his eyes, stemming off tears before they can flow. "We signed the order, then changed our mids. But it was already too late. They had taken Harlan right out of school to the harvest camp, and rushed him through. It had already been done.""

The nurse was also very calm too. This goes back to the fake happiness A+A because the surgeons probably told themselves that this was for the best and that the Unwinds were happier this way. On page 292 the surgeons say
"Did you see yesterdays game?"
"Heartbreaker."
"Splitting the corpus callosum."
"Nice technique."
"Well, Its not brain Surgery."

Unwind is a book with many unfair events from unexpected deaths, unwinding orders, or paralysis. A good quote to capture a moment of unfairness is when Conner's life was so close to being stripped from him on page 311. In that page, it says, “Coming out of the ruined glass doors of the Chop Shop is Conner. He’s stumbling. His face is a shredded, bloody mess. He’s lost an eye. His right arm is crushed and mangled.”
