This correlates well with "House on Mango Street" because the narrator Esperanza is addressing her childhood majority of the time. These kids primarily express the joy of having friends through talking and having fun, but also addresses the important role a friend plays into molding you as a person in the future.

I didn't just add this picture of Charlie Brown and Snoopy because I love Peanuts, which I DO! But I added this because Charlie Browns relationship with Snoopy is a true and powerful example of how friendship works and what it looks like to belong to something or someone. This honestly goes for all of Charlie Browns friends. They demonstrate how in life, we will experience waves that positively or negatively impact are lives, but despite the changes, which could be location, status, behavior, and much more, your friends will always be there to pick you up and place that smile back on your face. I also believe we should strive to make more friendships like Charlie Brown's.

Friendship and belonging have a prominent place in my heart because of the impact it has had on my life and my development. Early on in life I did not belong to anyone for roughly five years, but around age five I was immediately embraced and loved by my new family, which I have belonged to for 15 years now. Since then I have had positive influence in my life like my siblings and parents setting me up for success and making me a better person daily. Also, during this time I have made close friends with a couple of people through school, sports, and out side activities like camps. These friends that I have made, have pushed me in ways my family couldn't like physically and socially because lets be honest, we don't behave around our families like we do around our friends. What makes my friendships even more special is because I am confident in them to last and know that even outside of school when we move onto our separate lives, these few people will still play an important role in mine.

This vignette does a good job addressing both parts of the theme, which is why I am gonna break it down a little easier.
Friendship: In this vignette friendship is addressed by how her family works and who is friends with who in the family. Unfortunately there is no one in the family near her age so she is stuck with Nenny, while Carlos has Kiki to play with. Do to this inconvenience, Esperanza goes into sharing what her ideal friend would look like as "One I can tell my secrets to. One who will understand my jokes without my having to explain them". This shows that she prefers a more mature friendship than the one she has with Nenny, which is where Lucy and Rachael come in.

Belonging: This is portrayed through Esperanza's frustration with Nenny because she is too young to be her friend, but she also understands the value of family and how it takes some sacrifices when you are part of a family. This vignette also starts of by addressing the concept of belonging by saying "The boys and girls live in separate worlds."

"Laughter" is a little different in the fact that it heavily addresses the theme of belonging and not as much as the theme of Friendship.
Belonging: This vignette has examples of belonging all over the place, starting with it's comparisons of Lucy and Rachael. In this comparison they address how people can tell they are related (belong) because "Rachael and Lucy who have the same fat popsicle lips like everybody else in their family." This is a great example because it points out how they belong in physical ways. Then Esperanza goes onto say how she doesn't have any of those basic similarities like others that make her an Nenny look like siblings, but they do have their laughter, which was described as "Not the shy ice cream bells’ giggle of Rachael and Lucy’s family, but all of a sudden and surprised like a pile of dishes breaking." This is significant because it shows how people can belong in social ways because they may talk or behave in similar ways.

"Rachael and Lucy look at me like I'm crazy, but before they can let out a laugh, Nenny says: Yes, that's Mexico alright. That's what I was thinking exactly."
Reasoning: The reason I chose this quote for our theme is because I liked how it demonstrated the way being around someone can affect your thinking. This is shown by the blank reactions from Rachael and Lucy because they aren't around Esperanza 24/7 and don't have the same experiences as her, they tend to think differently and not understand certain things. But, since Nenny has been around Esperanza more to understand her and has had similar experiences, this is one of those moments they are able to share and understand because they both know what it means when Esperanza says "That house looks like Mexico".

Friendship and belonging is something I have worried about for a long time but I don't stress over it. If people want to hangout with me of be friends with me that's fine, but I'm not going to go out of my way to stay friends with them when they are showing no effort. Like Esperanza, I don't have a friend that I can tell all of my secrets too or someone I can call my best friend. Thankfully for her she found friends and became close with 2 girls. I have multiple friends but unlike most people I don't have a typical best friend. My best friend is my boyfriend, I tell him all the gossip, vent and I just know he's the only person I can trust who will keep all of my secrets. I am very thankful for my family and friends but sometimes I feel as if I don't belong and that is totally okay. You are not always going to belong and get along with everyone.

"The special kids, the ones who wear keys around their necks, get to eat in the canteen. The canteen! Even the name sounds important"(Cisneros 43).
This quote portrays the thought of belonging by showing how she is jealous of the kids who get to eat in the canteen. I chose this quote because it shows how she wanted to fit in and belong in this group of kids who ate in the canteen by nagging at her mom to let her eat in there. After nagging her mom about it her mom gave in and she realized that eating in the canteen was nothing special.

"Cathy Queen of Cats" shows both a theme of friendship and belonging in the vignette.
Friendship: Cathy is moving away but she still asks Esperanza to be friends. Even if for a very short time friendships can mean a lot.

Belonging: In the vignette belonging is shown by the similarities of Esperanza and Cathy. Cathy lives in a very similar environment as Esperanza, run down housing with people around that aren't meant for kids. The two of them create their own reality to distract them from the bad things. Esperanza understands Cathy.

The vignette is mainly about friendships and what they mean.
Friendship: The vignette starts by saying "If you give me five dollars I'll be your friend forever." In this quote friendship is an object. It is bought and sold for a price. Esperanza pays 5 dollars to spilt the cost of a bike. They share the bike and ride it together. Even though the friendship was bought, it was made up for the fun the girls had.

"You want a friend, she says. Okay, I'll be your friend. But only till next Tuesday." (13)

Cathy asks Esperanza if she wants a friend but it can only until she moves away. The quote gives an insight into how friendships are at young age. They are very unpredictable and don't matter much. Friendships are created and dissolved for lifetimes or in the blink of an eye.

Friendship and belonging played a big role in Esperanza's character development as she gets older throughout the book. At the beginning of the book her friendships were object formed and broken easily. She learned from all of her experiences and realized that friendship means so much more. Esperanza's friendships at the end are based more on commitment and community.

Friendship and belonging is something I struggled with. I never had a ton of close friends and now I have a bestfriend but still don't have many other close friends. I always felt like I didn't belong so I pretend to be someone else to different people. Though I believe that every friendship should be based on commitment. It is important to find friends and belong. It is a very big part in someone's character.
