There is connection between maths and dance, for example, the centre of gravity and the search for balance. I remember Entity show, whose choreographer is Wayne McGregor. His work is known for its vocabulary of movement, for its integration of dance with film and visual art, and for its incorporation of computer technology and biological science. In his show dance enters Mathematics by applying body technology as a program to develop a mathematical and geometric organization of movements.

The panels delimiting the scene of the second part of the show rise and become screens on which numbers are projected, Pythagorean theorem, Fibonacci series, golden section and geometric diagrams.

In the ground projections of the mathematical concepts, the dancers come together, who, recalling the depictions of Leonardo da Vinci, become living elaborations of those concepts. The numbers flowing in the pictures projected on the panels are entities, as are gestures and dance steps. As with a simple number, it is possible to generate an infinite and random series of combinations and theorems that regulate our knowledge, even a classic dance step can be modelled into infinite sequences.

I try the dance a good ally of math. To describe rotations or time to dance it's need specify angles, fractions or also to follow a path, or to fix a point in the horizon to be in equilibrium. I never tested it in a classroom, but it could be introduce the collaboration between math and dance (also in cooperation with collegues of gymnastic).

It would be nice to accompany the students to see a ballet! Balance and symmetry are tied by a tight relationship that allows the dancer to appear lightweight, agile and elegant. It would be enough to note the symmetry associated with the main movements such as the plié or the grand-plié.

By researching the relationship between dance and Maths, I found that:
The Hungarian Rudolf Laban (1879-1958) devoted his entire life to the description of the movement, both symbolic and geometric.His interest in mathematics and dance led him to structure an annotation system , referred to by his name "LABANOTATION", still in use today. In his opinion, any dance, regardless of origin and style, can be described and then reproduced, by using a language with mathematics (geometry) or symbolic.
In standard labanotation , a vertical three-line staff represents the performer. The center line divides the staff into right and left columns, which represent the main body parts. Each direction symbol is based on a rectangle and indicates four movement factors: its shape shows the direction of movement; its shading indicates level; its lenght represents the duration of the movement; its placement on the staff indicates the part of the body that is in action

In Estonia we have Song and Dance Celebration. A large number of dancers form different shapes while dancing. I have made math tasks for that theme. Students had to calculate how many dancers form a figure. They created dance patterns with Geoboard.
I have used dancing for the "brain breaks" too, my favorites are videos by comedy group Koo Koo Kangaroo.

In Croatia we have different kind of rythms in defferent part of country, very popular is silent circle dance from Dalmatian Hinterland. All dancers perform simultaneously the same figures (hand gestures) and steps. One idea that I have is that maybe they can dance in geometric figures, for example following the perimeter of a square, the area of a triangle or even the volume of a sphere. Also something related to fractions. In more advances courses perhaps different trigonometric functions and graphs.

Another tricky combination for me. As with music, I really find it difficult to be resourceful when ot comes to combine these subjects with Maths but I am all eager to see, study and learn from the practices of colleagues and make my lesson more appealing to my students. I am thinking that I could work together with the PE teacher at our school and after my students have been taught the steps of a traditional dance have them trace the patterns on paper and work on the sequence of motifs.

I know that maths and music are connected, but I haven't thought about in in the ways shown above. As I work with young children we always count something. We count syllables and letters in words, we clap and sing... I will consider dancing in math classes in the future.

Teaching how to count music.
The first thing to do to learn a choreography is to learn to count music to know when you have to or do a certain movement.
Usually a music composition is formed by periods (P) of 8 times (T) each.
How to say: Count 1 to 8 and then resume.
So 1P (1 period) is made up of 8T (8 times). Technically it is not always so in both terms and counts, but that's what it takes to know how to set up choreography.

I use greek traditional dances, because it is something familiar to students, to show how we can figure out the pattern, use multiple to find out which step is going to be in a specific number. Very helpful, but for bigger age classes.

I found it easier to find ways that I could use the music connection more easily than the dance but I do find the examples given interesting. I like the idea of using dance to explore patterns, as well as a great way to practice terminology like in the first video.

I use Movement mostly in Physics: when we talk about about S-t diagram and laws of cinematic, I usually make the student try to diagram the movement of one of their pals: we fix a system of reference on the floor (establish origin and positive versus) and one of the students move as he/she pleases, following the time marked by a metronome. His/Her fellow student have the task of representing the movement on a Cartesian diagram.

I think the activities shown in the video are really amazing. I'm going to propose some project work on Maths applied to sport together with the P.E. and the Maths teacher at the next teachers council meeting. Dance and Maths combined is a great way teachers can help pupils memorise or make sense of mathematical concepts. In fact,while doing all types of sport and physical activities they learn mathematical concepts and carry out mental operations.
