Deviance can range from something minor, such as a traffic violation, to something major, such as murder.

Each society defines what is deviant and what is not, and definitions of deviance differ widely between societies. For example, some societies have much more stringent rules regarding gender roles than we have in the United States, and still other societies’ rules governing gender roles are less stringent than ours.

Local news will sometimes report on a something like a "new teen drinking game," implying it is a popular trend instead of the actions of one group. The media and deviance give viewers an insight to the way that society is changing and it therefore reflects it through the content displayed. The media uses platforms for a purpose and showcasing deviance is one of these purposes.
