In K-5 we began to work on phonics skills. I was very nervous about reading because I feared making a mistake. I was often frightened to read out loud and would instead sound words out in my head. This meant it took me longer to learn my letters as I struggled to envisions how sounds looked on the page and how to write them myself.

I had an amazing teacher for 2nd grade, Mrs. Hulen! She recognized my fear of reading and worked with me one on one until I became more confident. By the end of 2nd grade I was reading 2 grade levels above my age and my writing skills become much smoother!
