When Napoleon wanted to enforce his rules, this made the Peninsulares angry, and the creoles showed their loyalty to the new "French" king because they wanted to expand their power. A peasant uprising started, but failed until a second peasant uprising began and they were much more affective. In 1820, Spain had a liberal revolution. Bonifacio was made a minister and mentored Pedro. Bonifacio helped Pedro gain power and Pedro declared independence and traveled back to Rio. He was declared emperor but ruled according to the constitution Bonifacio put in place. The remainder of people loyal to Portugal were overthrown without much bloodshed.
