The main problem with the enfield rifles was the cartridges were greased with either pig fat or cow fat. The cartridges had a greased paper covering one end, that had to be bitten off before loading it into the gun. There was a rumour that the paper was made of pig fat or cow fat. Muslims are forbidden to eat pork and Hindus consider cows to be gods. As this was against the Hindu and Muslim sentiments and religious ideologies. Since these cartridges were made in India, by the Indian workforce ,they would not have killed and used the pig fat or cow fat to manufacture the greased paper covering for the cartridge.
