Thoughts and values are often overlooked when thinking about your voice. However, this doesn't mean it's a different voice. It's the same. My voice is the firmness and confidence within myself. We all have different opinions about what our voices mean. However, I think we all came to the agreement that it is more than what we say. It's how we act, react, and revise our opinions the more we learn.

I think she's expressing how vital it becomes to truly put into perspective everything needed to identify a voice. When Bryan Doyle wrote "Leap" he used all of his possible resources to truly understand what happened. Your voice will need constant edits and drafts because your first thoughts aren't always fully there. When thinking about your voice, it's not tone and vocabulary. It's about how deep you're willing to go to reach your true voice.

Even when I've reached my goal, that "harsh" voice tells me I should've set my standards higher. In the contrary to my empathic voice, who shows understanding to others. That voice comforts them with positive affirmations. I'm able to give them the benefit of the doubt because I'm self aware of the struggles they could possible be going through.

I was very surprised with such a blunt ending. I see what he means with flash writing; you aren't able to get deep into a characters thoughts. You have to go back and really look into his style of framing sentences to understand it to the full extent. The irony of it was completely brilliant. I love how he transitions back into the farm people's narrative and they are completely unfazed by the fact he committed murder. They don't sense any regret or guilt. "They always knew". You personally then have to reflect how could they be so blind to their own faults.

My takeaways for today are that one's voice is a compilations of many inner thoughts and voices. We get to see how we almost think the same way. Then one reading each others letters, we get to experience each other's raw emotions. We feel a deeper connection to the writing itself.

From my understanding, the voiced of the innocence is simply retelling the encounter. It doesn't involve the depth of emotions. It could be compared to when a child is trying to explain what happened to an adult. "The Voice of Innocence relates the facts of the story, the surface subject or action" (p.71). Children often see everything as black and white and can't comprehend how actions have repercussions and reasoning. In the contrary to the voiced of the experienced. They're able to go back to the actions and understand their feelings and how they feel about to currently. It provides a sense of justice to the character. Silverman states "the Voice of Experience, meanwhile, conjures these items into the magic I actually felt at the time, but was too inchoate to express" (p.72). It's able to invite the reader to experience the same things she was once feeling. The reader is able to involve themselves into the reading with the figurative language used.

My parents were panicking, trying to gather everything we could from our house near the water and move to my cousin's house across town. And that was it, the last time I saw my house standing.

The sense of urgency smelt in the air; you could slice the tension between my parents' gaze, meeting mine telling me that everything would be okay.

I loved seeing everyone's padlet and having them describe it. It becomes more personal when they talk about it. I feel like as a class we were able to connect as a whole more. As for "You Owe Me", I believe that Arnold was able to interchange her voice from the experienced and innocent so we could have a deeper understanding as to why she stays in this job. Most importantly, she used her voice just as Bryan Doyle did in "Leap". She used the children's experience to describe their lives.

Since I've previously stated my claim I feel as if constantly reminding the reader of it becomes redundant. Although my points and evidence do tie into my claim, as a writer, since I know my own claim, I could forget that the reader may get lost. The reader could forget my claim or become overwhelmed with the amount of evidence I use. I feel like a linking sentence becomes necessary for me because it reminds me to bring back my point. The linking sentence lets me tie in how relevent my evidence is.

How does she create that voice, the voice of the narrator?
How is this essay structured? How does it express what the author suggested from the first paragraph?
Is there a counterargument?

Both Alexa and I agree to believe that Mira and Bharati still have contradicting perspectives towards their citizenship status in America. Within the introduction, Bharati mentions how she is a citizen and Mira is not. As they both find themselves on opposing ends, Bharati still feels superior compared to her sister. As Bharati concludes her essay, she displays more emotion with empathy towards her sister. Mira sticks to like her label as an "expatriate" Indian rather than being called an American immigrant. Being an expatriate Indian gives Mira a sense of pride while Bharati's citizenship in America gives her a sense of superiority. Bharati states that they both chose to live in America. Bharati chooses to make it her home. Mari decided to continue being a foreigner. Both the introduction and conclusion mirror each other as the introduction came in with a voice of innocence and the conclusion came out in the voice of experience.

When revising an essay, it's crucial to take feedback and analyze where you could improve the clarity of your thesis, organization, and word choice. Once you organize better, the reader is able to interpret the writing better. In "Rice" the author was able to describe how this rice ties into her fathers resilience. We were able to imagine her point of view.

The best breakfast I've ever had were my grandmother's homemade tamales. Waking up to the scent of fresh corn inside masa, wrapped snug between a palm leaf, was the dream. As I unwrap the soft warm leaf, the steam of the tamale hugs my face. It falls ever so delicately onto my plate. As I take my first bite, I release all the anticipation of a Salvadorian treat.

10/20 Entrance Ticket: Initial reactions to Hot Chicken. Identify at least one food description that impressed you, stopped you, or made you think (or feel your hunger).

Danny Chau's description of his food from visit to a traditional Sichuanese restaurant allowed me to envision what he'd be eating. "We ordered a traditional hot pot full of meats and vegetables covered in a bubbling broth, loaded with dried whole chili pods and anesthetic Sichuan peppercorns, and topped off with what looked like a tanker explosion of crimson chili oil" (Chau 79). I connected "bubbling broth" to witches hovering over a pot of their evil potion, looking at it with bright cunning eyes. And that's exactly what he wants. He wants something that will cause him pain and pleasure at the same time. This meal melted the lines between pleasure and pain. Perhaps this is why it was one of the best meals he had ever had.

I loved analyzing this together as a class because we were able to jump off of each others ideas and continue the deeper understanding. In my life forward, when reading something like this, I'll take into consideration how committed to the subject the writer is. The amount of passion Chau demonstrates shows that he actually did his research and did all he could and will continue to do so after this article. In order to truly understand the subject, you have to be 110% committed first.

She is not" (Mukherjee).

She introduces the topic and gives us a gist of what will occur. I do believe that she provides us with a thesis statement.
10/25 Entrance Ticket: What is meant by "raw emotion"?

Raw emotion stands on your initial, yet developed thoughts. These feelings rely on your own feelings without developing logic reasoning. It only involves yourself. In Lee Martin’s “Dumber Than” he describes his encounter with a local boy who was constantly bullied, later becoming a murder, because he was “dumb”. Lee Martin becomes fed up with his actions and physically hurts him. His raw emotions project through his statement of “How was I to know, when I grabbed him by his arm, that one day when he was a grown man, he'd take a golf-club—a five iron— and beat his wife until she was dead? " (Lee 69). He didn’t put into consideration about all the victims included. He victimized himself by only caring about his own guilt. He reasoned with himself that because he didn’t know he would become a murder, he attacked him. It is a voice who establishes the story without any outside influential factors.
