1. What made Nelson Mandela a 'truly radical change agent'?

Nelson Mandela was a social right activist, politician and philanthropist. He grew up in a small village in the Eastern Cape called Mvezu, where he learnt about African history and the discrimination against non-whites in South Africa. All of his life he wanted to help end this so that everyone could live freely and equally. Later in his life, he studied law at university, and there he met people who had similar beliefs to him. He became a civil rights leader, who lead many people against the Apartheid government, which was a system of racial inequality keeping all races separate from each other. He led non-violent protests for 20 years, however, he was then imprisoned for conspiring to overthrow the state government. He spent a total of 27 years in prison, and throughout this entire time he never gave up hope and he fought for his freedom. In 1994, after he was released from prison, Mandela became the first black president of South Africa. He fought for people who were disadvantaged by the system of racial segregation, and he established a multicultural government.

2. How much is Mandela truly radical?

How has their work encouraged a more open-minded view rather than a close-minded controlled view?
Nelson Mandela's work has encouraged a more open-minded view as he has proved that coloured people and white people are equal and should be treated as such. His work has inspired many, and now South Africa is a fully democratic country. His work helped to prevent a civil war, and he ensured that no one would be victimised based on the colour of their skin.

How did he challenge what was going on in the world?
Apartheid was an all-white government that was introduced to South Africa in 1948. The system gave little opportunities to non-whites and it took away their basic human rights, which included education, freedom of movement and rights to self-determination. Mandela joined the ANC (African National Congress) and he was later elected president of the ANCYL (African National Congress Youth League). At first, he tried to use non-violent techniques as he was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, but later on, they used more powerful strategies. After this Mandela and his fellow civil rights activists were labelled as terrorists.

How did they take personal risks for the wellbeing for others rather than risking lives?
Mandela spoke on behalf of the whole black community in South Africa so that they could live in peace and freedom. He was willing to fight against the government so that others didn't have to. He knew the possible consequences of his actions, but he knew that it was the right thing to do.

Who might he have offended along the way? How might this have impacted him?
Mandela's work offended many people, both coloured and white. The white government were not happy with what Mandela was doing, as they were threatened by him. He was going against everything that they stood for, and he was trying to end the Apartheid system, which they were a part of. Some people of colour were also offended by Mandela's work. They wanted to live in a society where they were not treated differently because of the colour of their skin, but they were scared of what the government could do to them if they spoke up and tried to create change. This caused Mandela to have to work very hard to achieve their trust, as they were all being put at risk by protesting.

3. Compare and contrast their worldview with the worldview they had to deal with

Mandela was a Christian, and he had a strong faith in God, which helped him to make decisions and never give up. He believed that everyone was equal, no matter the colour of their skin. He had strong morals which were peace, forgiveness, equality, freedom and kindness. He believed that change could be made in a peaceful way without war, and he fought to do so. The people he was fighting against were closed-minded, and they did not like change. They wanted power, and they were selfish. They were in charge of a system that allowed black people to be enslaved or harmed. This is very different from Mandela's world view as he valued equality and freedom, and they valued the opposite.

His work has inspired me to stand up for what I believe in, and it has given me the confidence to be a voice for the people who are less advantaged than me.
