  • While an interest group is considered a group looking to gain advantages or benefits through political lobbying, there is a difference with relevant special interest groups as they are more popular and more powerful. As long as the interest group stays relative they can continue to grow and work towards their goal. Without relevance the interest group will start to disappear and lose members.

Issue entrepreneurs took advantage of circumstances, like political polarization after the 2000 presidential election (George W. Bush) and the rise of security issues after 9/11, to weaken the policy through enforcement, or self-deportation, laws throughout the country. Democratic-leaning cities and states are much more likely to pass such legislation than Republican-leaning areas who were much more likely to be in favor of restrictive laws. Municipal identification cards, for example, were passed in Democrat-controlled cities, while driver’s licenses for the unauthorized citizens have also generally been passed in Democratic-leaning states. States with more Latinos part of their electorate and naturalized immigrants are more likely to provide driver’s licenses, in-state tuition, and financial aid for unauthorized residents.
