There would be more professional boundary disputes and concerns about who gets what institutional funding (not saying it's a bad idea, just have seen this happen again and again during the start up of many area studies and interdisciplinary programs).

That said, hopefully it would make it easier to integrate a more robust program of infolit into the general curricula.

practitioners would be called upon to speak publicly about information when there's dis/misinfo. Thinking like information "pundits"

Either it would become more exclusive to one discipline OR or would become more interdisciplinary (including libraries). I hope for the latter

With so many terms, approaches, content being addressed by librarians, IL would have to become an umbrella term to include critical literacy, digital literacy, design thinking etc. We’re all over the map these days…

Ideally it would help make it the norm for new generations to think critically about the information they encounter and work to change how people interact with information.

As a discipline, where would we place it? I think that strategic placement within the academy would affect sustainability, potential for collaboration and how the discipline is viewed by others (e.g. Information sciences? Sociology? Education? Communication?)

I’m not sure. I like the idea of more reflection, discussion of ethics, content, and rigor but I’m concerned about barriers to access. In theory I find the concept appealing and career rejuvenating but perhaps limited in scope or reward.

"Information literacy" might take over the rhetorical space and work currently performed by "critical thinking" in the popular academic discourse.

I’m not sure how it would function as a stand alone discipline. I can see it as a minor to complement other disciplines but, if someone were to get a degree in IL, I think the main question would be ‘but what can you DO’

How do we make it less profitable/enticing for people to be uninformed? Bill spoke about the value of political parties/think tanks and these are typically funded by rich folks who may not have any incentive to make a more literate public.
