Basic:

Renjun was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, privilege and wealth were as common as cell phones to him.

His father is a well-known televangelist with more than one bestselling book published under his name.

his mother is also equally as well-known an author.

scandal tended to follow renjun's father, his extraordinary wealth bringing allegations (not unfounded) of pocketing church money to fuel their extravagant lifestyle

Mom and dad lived by a very strict set of morals and rules, such that much of renjun's early education was done at home.

Mother also held very strict beliefs about modern medicine, she did not believe in vaccinations, or interventional medicine thinking that what happens is God's will and that they shouldn't interfere or try to change that.

By the time Renjun reached the final years of his primary school education, he was back in-class learning with his peers.

not a year after renjun was allowed to attend regular school by his mother, a particularly vicious, scandalous rumor began circling that Renjun's father had used church money to purchase a private jet. He had claimed that the jet was for church-related travel but as far as renjun knew there were no plans to travel for the church

In order to repair and divert these rumors mom decided that the best thing she could do for her husband is put her career on hold and take the jet on official church business.

Though renjun protested he was forced to go with his mother to spend time in a third-world country providing education and humanitarian aid to the less fortunate.

here renjun truly grew into the man that he is, he learned what it meant to be a brother and a friend with all the trappings of wealth stripped away. He learned how to lead and to care for those he was in charge of.

It was also during this time that he began to question his parents and their death grip on their belief system.

He began to ask why, incessantly almost, poking holes in the logic of the beliefs that his parents held so dearly.

He poured himself into his schoolwork when he wasn't helping the other children in the village, asking for more and more advanced textbooks that deviated from the normal home school curriculum that he was so used to.

For his 15th birthday, he was gifted an expensive telescope. probably his most loved and used item he would take it to the top of the hill away from the generator lights and stare into the stars for hours

One of the boys in the village, Adil, one he equated to something of a younger brother also was interested in the stars, and they would often spend all night on that hilltop telling each other stories of what kinds of worlds could orbit those distant suns.

towards the end of that year, Adil grew sick, and no medicines they had with them could help him resolve the cough that he was experiencing. Another month passed and despite Renjun's pleading his mother never called for a proper doctor proclaiming that it was just a cold and God would heal him, Renjun just needed to pray harder. It wasn't until Adil was bedridden coughing up blood and struggling to breathe that she brought in a doctor.

By that time it was too late to give Adil the antivirals that he needed to defeat the TB that he was afflicted with. And though the doctors tried their best it was in vain, Adil died, in pain, choking on his own blood with Renjun at his bedside.

something in Renjun broke that day, Anger and despair swallowed him whole.

Shortly thereafter Renjun and his mother returned to the United States, he resumed his normal studies and tried to put his grief behind him.
