In The Catcher in the Rye, the central message is the protection of the innocence of kids/children. This is because, throughout the book, Holden's loss of innocence caused him to trust fewer people. He displays that he wishes to keep the innocence of the kids when he tries to erase the "F U" markings on the wall. At the end of the book, Holden talks about catching kids in the Rye so they don't fall over the cliff, it symbolizes Holden keeping kids' innocence.

Having Phoebe grounded Holden from doing too crazy of things - When Holden said he was running away, Phoebe said she wanted to come, and he refused and told her he was going to stay. Having Phoebe as a companion kept him from acting out too much).

An example from the book is how different Holden and Phoebe's viewpoints are. When Holden visits Phoebe she becomes very upset after learning how he has failed school again. This shows how she deeply cares for him and does not want him to get in trouble. Phoebe is very compassionate to Holden and most people in general because she has her innocence where as Holden, who is much older, has a very cynical view on the world where he sees most people as "fake" or "phony".
