This post says "While Bush spends billions playing cowboy, 37 million North Americans don’t have health insurance. A North American dies of AIDS every eight minutes." It made me angry. Many people in the US were without health insurance before Obamacare and it is disturbing to hear that someone died every 8 minutes from AIDS.

This poster is disturbing because it depicts the male phallic. I understand that not everyone is disturbed by these images and the reason for the art is to make a statement against violence that was incurred. According to the Yale site
"The Yale Lesbian and Gay Studies Center’s second annual conference, held in 1989, turned out to be a flashpoint for AIDS activism on campus. Yale Police arrested conference speaker Bill Dobbs, a New York-based lawyer and member of the prominent AIDS activist group ACT UP, for hanging posters described as “obscene” inside Yale Law School. New Haven police subsequently arrested several members of the Gay and Lesbian Co-Op who challenged Dobbs’ arrest. Protests erupted when Yale President Benno Schmidt refused to comment on allegations of homophobic police brutality. The posters in question contained erotic illustrations and the words “Sex is,” and “Just sex,” and had been created by the San Francisco guerilla art collective Boys with Arms Akimbo in the wake of a federal ban on AIDS education."(https://onlineexhibits.library.yale.edu/s/community-in-crisis/page/student-activism)

Author: César Carrasco Date: June 19th, 1990 Demonstration: INS Protest "In 1990, the International AIDS Conference was announced to take place in San Francisco. The United States had introduced an immigration and entry-ban for HIV+ people in 1987, which prevented HIV/ AIDS activists from abroad from attending the conference. The issue of whether to send ACT UP NY representatives to San Francisco divided the organization." (https://actuporalhistory.org/lc-archive/immigration-wants-you)

I think this is an effective piece of art. It depicts a US soldier with a snake tongue holding an HIV test kit. He is pointing with his other hand and holding a sign that says out signaling that those who test positive are not welcome. This upsets me because it is a form of medical discrimination.

(https://www.brooklynmuseum.org/opencollection/objects/159258) "In 1987, Avram Finkelstein, Brian Howard, Oliver Johnston, Charles Kreloff, Chris Lione, and Jorge Socarrás founded the SILENCE=DEATH Project to support one another in the midst of the AIDS crisis. Inspired by the posters of the Art Workers Coalition and the Guerrilla Girls (both of whose work is on view nearby), they mobilized to spread the word about the epidemic and created the now-iconic Silence=Death poster featuring the pink triangle as a reference to Nazi persecution of LGBTQ people in the 1930s and 1940s. It became the central visual symbol of AIDS activism after it was adopted by the direct action advocacy group AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP)."

The ACT Up movement used art to inspire change not only for AIDS victims, but for the LGBTQIA+ community, the uninsured, the imprisoned and women. Like other nonviolent movements in India, Denmark and the Civil rights movements, the Art was a nonviolent protest. Though unlike those movements, the art itself was the integral part of the movement and allowed for education and awareness.
