I have learnt about when you have a dark setting and want only one - or a few - light source you have to almost always try to get it to appear as though this light is going form something that should be there. for example a lamp or the moon through a window. if the light is from somewhere it doesn't make sense for it to be this could distract the audience and if they lose focus that will not find the movie scary - which is the point of a horror film. Also I now know that when a character is in silhouette but you can see their eyes glowing, it is because they have reflective tape on their eye lids, a small barely noticeable light source will be pointed directly at them so only the eyes can be seen and not the whole person if the light was stronger. S o when you see someone like this in a film, they actually have their eyes closed the whole time - unless CGI is used instead.
Later we tried to re-create these techniques, we wanted to use the Gib for this to create a great shot with the use of silhouette. We found that the sand bag we had been given was broken - again as we had this issue last year and informed the technician - and this may have had the result of caused the pole to come out of its socket and crash to the floor and the camera and top of the tripod to come out of balance and alignment, meaning we had to set it all up from the beginning and leaving us with not time to re-shoot the shot. Next time we must check all the equipment before getting on set and asking for a better one there and then. This way we can avoid this type of issue with all the equipment - not just the Gib - and can have a more productive time filming. 
Also I have learnt that the sticky reflective tape that goes on the charterers eyes is very painful and creates some difficulty when filming. 
This is because once the tape is on, the actor cannot open their eyes. meaning that they need to know their movements all before hand and be confident that they can then perform without seeing. They also cannot see anything that the rest of the team is doing or trying to direct them with hand signals when filming. 
It is not painful when the actor has them on but instead very painful when trying to take the sticky side of the tape off of their eye lids. 
next time we will fully rehearse and get the plan completely straight before putting on the tape, and instead of putting it on the eye lids we will be positioning them onto either the eyebrows of the forehead - its supposed to be a monster so the apparently weird eye positions could benefit us and add to the creepy undertone of the film. ]]> 2017-09-15 14:06:49 UTC https://padlet.com/chloe_13a/5dn2kngn22on/wish/187946552 chloe_13a https://padlet.com/chloe_13a/5dn2kngn22on/wish/188879483 Today we have been doing folly and sound effects. when editing the video from last week we had a problem with accidentally deleted the time line and the view screen, I'm not sure till how this happened but I know now how to get them back. later we created our own sound effects - I brought in a thumb piano - and created sounds like footsteps, heartbeats and the sound of an axe chopping a head off. we had problems with not finding things to create the right sounds we wanted e.g. to hear a head falling we would have the sound of the head and the plastic base hitting the floor when it bounced and this did not work at all. we fixed this by dropping the head onto a bean bag and this meant there was less of a bounce and the plastic base did not hi the floor. next time I would plan what sounds we want before hand - a few days if possible - and then I an plan what items would make the best noise and what I could bring in that is possible. ]]> 2017-09-19 13:31:41 UTC https://padlet.com/chloe_13a/5dn2kngn22on/wish/188879483 chloe_13a https://padlet.com/chloe_13a/5dn2kngn22on/wish/189314064 Today i have learnt music is important to horror - without it it is boring. garage band is not very good unless you are good at music or can play an instrument. ]]> 2017-09-20 13:37:15 UTC https://padlet.com/chloe_13a/5dn2kngn22on/wish/189314064 chloe_13a https://padlet.com/chloe_13a/5dn2kngn22on/wish/189710069 Today we have done prosthetics for the first time. This was both fun and interesting to do. I did a burn on my partners arem and hand. This was tricky to get right but I like how it turned out and I think it was good for the first time. Next time I would apply more tissue paper and use more black paint and defiantly the fake blood. This would have given it a shinier and more graphics look. I really hope we do more of this or I can be the costume person in a team. Later we created a fake eye. This was more frustrating. We could get the eye to stick to the eyeball, we think this was because there wasn’t enough of a flat surface on the eye. Then when it came to sticking the string to the eye we had trouble getting it thin enough to be realistic and then the thinker parts were either too high or spreading out too much. After a while gabbie and I got frustrated and did not try as much to get it right so we just stuck the thinker strings on the base area of the eye ball. I was very offended and humiliated. it was resolved by involving the teachers and the person was removed from the group as we had a prior history. we now have Julie in our group. Then I went to set up the lighting a camera in the living room for the first scene. this took longer than expected and we had the problem of blowing a fuse when we plugged a light in that the director (its her house) did not tell us about. then after a while the rest of the team came in when the lights went out to see what had happened, they did not ask how the set up was going and only said to each other "lets go into the other room" and we did not know what this for or why, we found out later for ourselves that they were creating the skin, which they had said they were going to do that night. this took them the entire day and we got no filming done. It has added one piece of the girl going up the stairs that I realised I had missed out the previous time and some point of view shots and close ups of the doll. Then Jayne and I went to do our directors (editor's and camera man's) commentary. we did this by moving a sofa from the old animation room to the new one and set it up in front of a computer - we used this in the background for the editor with a picture of some editing software (we wanted to actually use premier pro in the background but those computers are not equip with this so we used a screen shot from google so it still looked like the real thing) and for myself I had a high tech camera and tripod tat was in the room too reflect my role as the camera operator. We made sure to use the rule of thirds - so the person is not in the centre of the frame but either to the left or right which has a nicer effect and we had the item (camera or computer) in the opposite third. For mine it went well but we used another groups questions - we worked with Kirsten and Gabbie because we needed one person to film it one another to interview the person (this was better than the person on camera being the interviewer because otherwise the person would have been looking at the person with the camera but it looked better when they were looking at an angle to the camera, we learn this on a previous project two years ago when we conducted interviews.) - and the problem with using these questions was that I didn't know what they were going to ask next and so I accidently answered a question before it was asked. The scene goes grace sees small feet walking underneath her door that then stop in the middle of the closed doorway. she gets out of bed and opens her door. The doll is standing in the doorway with a knife (she is silhouetted). Scene ends. So we thought we would go to the old animation room to film in the cupboard that is in there - this is so we can see the doorway opening in the same way as the original bedroom door and create a silhouette by bouncing the light off the wall in the cupboard - unfortunately we underestimated how much stuff is in the cupboard and how little space we would have to work with. In the end the scene wasn't possible due to lack of space and the lights we were using (Large LEDs) were too reflective as they have folds for covering the lights. we then wanted to try at the top of one of the stairs (there is a lot pf space there) but there was nowhere to plug the lights in. Then we went to the animation room and rearranged some walls to have a better background and used two large LEDs to bounce light of the wall to silhouette the doll. we then did few tries to get the angle right. I wasn't sure if it should be from the girl's perspective or from a low angle to be at the dolls height instead. In the end we decided to go with an angle that was a little in between these two, with a little moving of the LED light we got a nice bit of film. I was also helping out the editor as she had some trouble because the director has still not uploaded the new storyboard - we have the old storyboard that the director edited slightly by crossing some things out and writing extra parts in but this was very confusing. We have asked her for a finished new version and are waiting for this to arrive on our shared Padlet. So I went through my shot list with the editor to try and make some sense of what needs to be done but I don't have the scenes listed just the shots and when we filmed the first day the storyboard was wrong so some scenes were missed out entirely which has now made it confusing when putting them all together. E.g. the 3rd scene on the clapperboard was called scene 11, and on the storyboard there is a scene 14.5 that is blank but we did film something that day. This will negatively effect our production as the editing will take much longer now that things need to be arranged and i may need to update the shot lost again as the director has made some new scenes but i couldn't add them earlier as they are still not in the script or the storyboard. ]]> 2017-11-16 13:36:45 UTC https://padlet.com/chloe_13a/5dn2kngn22on/wish/207643423
