The story talks a lot about social issues. In my opinion, the story talked about racism the most. At school, the narrator got bullied from the other girls at her school. They called her skinny and asked her if she ate rice and beans and pork chop, assuming that’s what she ate being Puertorican. When the narrator met Eugine’s mom, she assumed that the narrator was not smart and did poorly in school, just because the narrator couldn’t speak english very well. Even the neighborhood building was old and obnoxious.

This story shows us how people treated each other then and it wasn't very nice. When she was at school the other girls didn't treat her very kindly, they called her names and made fun of her. This bad treatment occurred outside of school as well, when she went to Eugene's house to study his mother told her that Eugene didn't need help with school and that he didn't need friends because it would make it harder on him when they leave. All of this shows us that people still showed hate and dislike for different ethnicities and the problems with race that were still happening.

It started in the United States and the United Kingdom, and spread to continental Europe and other parts of the globe. The 1960s were an era of protest. In the civil rights movement blacks and whites protested against the unfair treatment of races.
