When the war hit Phu's mother told him he needed to escape so his mother bought him a fake passport and space on a boat out of the country.With hundreds of people on a boat many pirates came and stole all of their items and food. When they  got to Mylasia,the cops came and took them to the Pulau Bidong refugee camp and because he didn't have any money, Phu was very lonely. He spent 14 days at sea and 8 months at the refugee camp. After the camp, Phu was sent to live with his cousins in "little Saigon" and soon after his family escaped Vietnam.
