I felt that as well as Mr Gelber have conveyed across environmentalism to us, his actions spoke much louder. Through his lifestyle, developed from when he was a child, he showed how much the environment meant to him and how much he is willing to do for it. I sincerely admire his conviction in speaking and have truly learnt that we can do much more than just personal action, but actively seek to change the actions and mindsets of those close to us. I have definitely benefited from his knowledge expertise; I now understand the haze situation better, as well as other important facts pertaining to air quality or even material of cement. His wide dedication to the cause and his broad expertise definitely is an inspiration for me and safe to say, everyone else present.

I found that the perspective which Mr Matthias Gelber put forth very pertinent to our current situation, because the thing is that many people/students in Singapore fail to see the importance of environmental protection as we do not really have that close and intimate link to nature that will spur us forth. Hence, the most important thing to convince people to rally with this cause would really be to connect with what they care about instead of only focusing on what is already true (ie the facts).

Firstly, I would like to thank the green council for inviting mr matthias — it is an invaluable opportunity to be able to talk to such an influential environmental activist. This talk was very eye-opening for me — Mr Matthias has reaffirmed something I believed that all environmental activists should strive to achieve — to connect and relate to their target audience. When we are trying to promote eco-friendly habits, we have to have a keen understanding of our target audience’s priorities — many of our audience frankly do not share our passion for the environment, but we will be able to package eco-friendly habits as being beneficial to health or in the case of businesses, profittable, to promote others to be more eco-friendly. Mr matthias has also showed the importance of innovation in environmental activism and conservation, from upcycling products we would normally waste, marketing these products, using refreshing ways of campaigning to promote awareness etc. This talk has certainly reignited my passion for, and ideas about environmental conservation.

my main takeaway from this talk is simply getting a recharge. in our immediate circles, it is a challenge to persist in our beliefs and beyond that, take action while trying to influence others. this may make us despair and eventually stop trying as hard, in the face of the brimming negativity and skepticism. this talk reinvigorated me and encouraged me to keep caring about things beyond myself (acads, cca), as well as to keep trying to influence those around me.

one suggestion for an extension (for perhaps future events) is for students who came to partake in an informal discussion/sharing about our personal experiences with this cause - it would be powerful, and empowering, especially for those of us who may not yet be extremely driven and committed to the cause.

What really struck me was when Green Man said the best memories are created with good scenery and the people you care about. To me this felt so close to heart and it made me realise that in life maybe the materalistic success we desire isn't actually the right thing to aim for. Time is the thing that we can never earn back, so creating quality time and beautiful memories beautiful experiences should be our priority. This means that sometimes the conveniences in life can be forsaken to play a better role in society, because in the end its still the environment that decides our quality of life. The examples that he gave about how he goes green really gave insight to the extent to which we can go. Although it is a little extreme and I would not go to the same extent he does, I'm way more observant about my practices and living habits now. Thank you Greenman
