Setting

The story takes place in the land of Skuldenore. There isn’t a specific time period in the story but it is presumably in the middle ages. I know this because on the interior of the cover it shows a map of Skuldendor, and the characters don't use gas lamp or guns, but bows and swords. The medical experience of the Apothecaries (doctors) suggests that they don’t have access to the training and teaching facilities we have today. The setting contributes to the story by making the wounds and blows dealt to and dealt by the other characters much more severe. The characters also only have access to some of the most basic means, namely horses and walking.

I think a possible theme in this story is Everything comes to an end eventually. I say this because in the story the curse on the land eventually ends, as does the imposter kings rule after a long fight with his army. Even the exiled citizens trouble comes to an end, Finnikins story even comes to an end, with him becoming the new king along with the Queen Isaboe.

The “Finnikin Of The Rock” is in third person. I know this because the character, Finnikin, refers to himself in a way that shows his feelings and thoughts, we are given perspectives of mostly every character, such as the second main character Evanjalin, or Sir Topher.

Conflict

One conflict in the story is man v man, I say this because Finnikin constantly bickers with The Novice Evanjalin, Finnikin also gets into conflicts with the thief Froi, who Finnikin meet and capture after he steals Evanjalin's ring in a marketplace. Froi constantly antagonizes the group. Finnikin rescues his father from imprisonment and proceeds to bicker with him repeatedly about what they should do. Another conflict in the story is Man v Self. I say that because Finnikin quarrels with himself in his mind, because he does not believe that Evanjalin is telling the truth about prince Balthazar. Prince Balthazar is the rightful heir to the throne of Lumatere, but he was believed to have been killed. The kingdom is run by an evil imposter king. Finnikin was a childhood friend of Balthazar and does not trust Evanjalin and her claims.

The antagonist of the story is not one main force, but multiple. In the prologue of the story it is revealed to the reader that the kingdom of lumatere is cursed by magic. This is revealed in this line. “When Seranonna, the matriarch of the Forest Dwellers, cried a blood curse as she burned at the stake, a curse that caused the land to shudder and split the Earth, that swallowed those who failed to run from the fury of its jaws, that crumbled village homes and shook the palace to its foundations.” The witch Seranonna cursed Lumatere because of the false king, who slaughtered Seranonna’s people, that is shown in this line “When the despised cousin of the dead king entered the kingdom with six hundred of his men and began to burn the forest dwellers in their homes.”
