The purpose of the procedure is to implicate a new trait into a species to improve it in some way or another.

The reasoning behind this lies in the numerous benefits/positive outcomes. One of these being that GMOs could provide the solution to world hunger very successfully. This is because when food such as corn is genetically modified, it is given traits that can allow it to be produced on a much larger scale. This includes the ability to avoid common pests that destroy billions of corn crops each year which allows plenty of food to be distributed to countries suffering from hunger. Besides this, GMOs are incredibly beneficial to our already fragile environment.
