"La mémoire inspire l’avenir"

I found the visit to the museum memorial act very interesting and thought-provoking. Apart from the interesting design of the building the exhibition itself gave me some new ideas for teaching, especially concerning the topic of "globalisation". Nevertheless, I have to admit that I found it very annoying that visitors are not allowed to take photos, because there were quite a few pieces of art I could use very well for class.
I was reminded that "culture" and "national identity" are quite often products of what one group of people does to another group of people - and rarely what you willingly and consciously decide yourself. And even if you make conscious decisions they are always influenced, if not directly triggered, by what others have done in the past.
We practiced some of the French skills we have acquired so far and I succeeded in ordering drinks in a café (although the coffee was the wrong type) and managed a few appropriate words in the restaurant.

Today I learned a lot of new aspects about the history of the Carribean that I did not know before. I mean with our students we discuss the triangular trade when talking about colonialism, however it was totally new to me that also some families sold their own family members into slavery or that African tribes also sold their enemies. Furthermore, I was quite impressed and also a bit astonished about how deep the remembrance of slavery still is for some of the Carribean people which you could also see in most of the contemporary artworks displayed in the museum.
Last but not least, I was also impressed how architecture and the way of lighting and interior design of the museum contributed to a rather special atmosphere suiting the exhibits.

Today we learned a lot about the history of slavery. I was very impressed by the idea, it could be possible to make people forget their own story, to loose their own personality (tree of forgotness). It is not possible at all!!! It was not a very good feeling to visit the museum as european. For me it is unbeliefable what happens in those days. In the museum I joined a class with very young children and it was a pleasure for me to hear, in which way the teacher worked with the young children by asking them about their culture and where they could find it in their lifes. History is living in each of us and culture unique us. We need a lot of teachers, parents, adults to talk about history in all cultures to create a sensibility for our history and our behaviour today!

Today was about a quite dark age of the Guadeloupe's history. We've learnt about slavery and all the other factors that shaped this island by visiting the ACTe museum in Pointe-à-Pitre. The exhibits showed very impressively the history of the island, some things were already known, like the black power movement, but other aspects were new to me, like the traditional clothes.

The market opened up another world. A world of spices and rum. It was a great experience to practice French by buying spices. The people were friendly and amazingly happy that I've tried to speak French. It encouraged me to speak more and more :)

So the day ended happily, which I thought to be lovely.

Slavery, black people, Bonaparte, Bob Marley...
Pieces of information that made me think of the things I've seen and experienced earlier in life connected to all this. Coming from a country with relatively small amount of immigrants, spending a year in Alabama USA in the 80's... Today's themes were very confusing. As a young woman in Alabama 30 years ago I witnessed the type of racism I had never seen before. Ending slavery was not the end of racism and that's what we still need to work on. Every day!

Today was about culture. Memorial ACTe was a very impressive and touching museum. I learned a great deal about slavery throughout the history of mankind. In order to try to change this dilemma which still happens all around the world we need to know, to care and to act in order to change ourselves and help to change the world as Dr James A. Banks said in our booklet. We just need to make sure that children as well do those three things.

At the market I was happy to be able to use those phrases and words we studied yesterday during our French lesson.

I have learned about Guadeloupian mix culture and can also see my own through this aspect. Should culture be a way of explaining your actions?

Portugal, this country of affable, friendly and welcoming people
Today's learning focus has been on multiculturalism and its place in the school curriculum. In the integration dimension of multiculturalism, the objective is to address the different multicultural origins of peoples. In the constructed knowledge of multiculturalism, we can explore the knowledge that history provides us to know the different cultures. The teaching of multiculturalism allows access to pedagogical equity among students. The approach to multiculturalism leads to the reduction of prejudice. This entrepreneurial vision of the approach to multiculturalism reinforces the school culture and its social structure.
Portugal, in its history, has indelibly marked the past, present, and future of humanity. In certain circumstances, in a more positive way, and in others in a more negative way. Every historical review must consider the world-historical circumstances in which they occurred. To decontextualize history is to purposely interfere with the truth of humanity. Portugal is proud of its past and its history. The greatness of a people is revealed in its capacity to assume its history and its capacity to revert its conduct to inalienable values of humanity. Portugal is proud of its children and its generations. Today, Portugal is a tolerant country, welcoming in peace and tranquillity from various communities and cultures, promoters of the essential values of humanity and an exemplary society in terms of human rights. Heroes of the sea, noble people, brave nation. In the homeland, one feels a voice of respect and tolerance for the multiculturalism of peoples and humanity.
Slavery?

Today we learn to apologize for the inhuman atrocities committed in the name of imperialism, capitalism, religion and science. Human constructs that have developed humanity. Without a doubt, cultural heritage is the support for the identity and creativity of peoples. In order to prevent the stories of the past and the present from being repeated in the future, it is the responsibility of each citizen to show more interest in the world around them. In this global awakening, family and school education are the most economic and effective means of creating the foundations of the bridges that transform humanity.
