Small things like saying the child's name correctly and learning a few phrases in the child's native language can instantly break the ice and make the child feel more welcomed.

Anticipating the child's needs and offering one-on-one help will ease out the initial phase too. Helping the student understand the class routine/schedule will help him feel more settled- visual aids can be used for this purpose.
