The origins of the novel can be traced to Virginia Woolf's meeting and relationship with the poet Vita Sackville-West in the late 1920s.
It was from Vita that Woolf drew inspiration for the character of Orlando, whose aristocratic birth and fluid sexuality were reminiscent of the poetess.

Orlando: biography or novel?

The title of the work is Orlando: A Biography. In fact, the work follows the events of Orlando focusing on the most significant events of his life. The style and structure underline the quality of the work. In the intentions of Virginia Woolf there was to demonstrate how the Victorian conviction of being able to produce objective biographies and which did not consider the interiority of the subject was unfounded. The novel, is the first work after war and can capture the complexity of life. A biography that does not take into account the psychology of its protagonist for Woolf cannot exist.

Virginia Woolf meets Vita Sackville-West when she is forty years old. In 1922 Virginia Woolf has been married to Leonard Woolf since 1912, the meeting of Vita will mark a significant turning point in her life. With her Virginia will live a passionate, intense, tormented love. If Virginia will love her exclusively and completely (despite her marriage to Leonard), Vita will also experience other relationships with other women during her life that will cause suffering to Virginia, whose mental health will suffer until the end of bipolar disorder. Despite the suffering, Virginia will dedicate - or rather will be inspired by - Vita for the creation of Orlando which remains one of the most beautiful love stories in literature. In the novel there are many parallelism between Virginia, Vita and Orlando.
