The cruel character is visually the opposite as well. This purposeful choice of the director to create this evil character as visually unpleasant is a vital choice for the plot. It is not pleasing to view a fully green character with asymmetrical facial features. The technicolor choice creates an ambiance of beauty and magic. The original movie starts in black and white and after the twister when she opens the door to OZ, color flys into frame as you view the beauty of OZ. This was an especially exciting feature because color was new to the screens. The color heightened the costumes, props, characters and overall experience of the movie. Although at this moment you are viewing the green city of OZ which typically symbolizes ambition and renewal, the scene shows physical props that are associated with each character. Each character entered their quest to meet the Wizard to retrieve something they wanted. For example, the Tin Man wanted a heart. But instead once they discovered the wizard was not real, he gave him a fake ticking heart and stated, " a heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others".
