Ben Ratliff really dragged this one on but I believe I understand his concepts. He talks about multiple artists and how one could listen to them in a certain way. Either you like a few of their songs, maybe only like one song or one of their albums, or you really embrace what the artist is trying to portray and you listen to everything they have to offer. For certain bands, I will listen to every song, every album from beginning to end so I can get the most out of what they are trying to show everyone. The problem is, is that for very picky listeners, like me, it's hard to find an artist that you can do this with.

The kind of musical listener I am is one that seeks out the artists that produce music that has replay value. Artists that make albums that are good from beginning to end. Ratliff identifies a few examples, like The Grateful Dead. The Grateful Dead has one of the biggest and passionate followings. They are a band that has made a ton of music and has performed live so many time over the years, it makes sense that the following could be considered to be like a cult. I agree that people should take more time to listen to their music more attentively and go through the discographies of their favorite artists.

Phish is another really good example of these cult like followings from an enormous fan base. There are people who live to just see Phish play live. Following their tour for every concert. Phish is an extremely talented band that has a very welcoming sound that just make you wanna dance.

Tool is one of my favorite bands and has a huge following of people who calls themselves the "Tool Army." Like most people who like Tool, I love every single album that they have produced. Sadly they haven't come out with a new album in over 10 years. They have been working on an album for at least 5 years now and there's no telling when it will be released, if ever.
