I have chosen “shark conservation” as my topic. I will study lots and lots of different species of sharks and their different traits, their role in marine ecosystems and how they’re important for our marine ecosystems and ways to protect them! I chose this topic because I really love sharks, why you may ask? I love sharks because they’re just such an interesting animal! People just don’t realise it because of the stereotypes(movies like Jaws and the Meg are making people believe these stereotypes even more, keep in mind I’m not saying these are bad movies, I haven’t watched them yet), they’re just so misunderstood. Also just how cool would it be to go to your job and see sharks/learn about sharks? I know this dream is almost impossible but I will try my hardest to achieve it! 🫶

If you’ve ever heard the way to defend yourself from a shark by “hitting it in the nose”, that’s because of Valerie Taylor. The Australian Valerie May Taylor born on November 9th 1935 was the first person known to cage dive with sharks, she’s a conservationist, photographer and filmmaker. Fun fact: Valerie helped Steven Spielberg make one of his most famous movies, Jaws.
After she killed a shark while shooting a movie in the 1960s, the Taylors had a “vision” : sharks needed to be studied and understood, rather than killed. Remember how I mentioned earlier how she helped film Jaws? She regretted that quickly. Jaws became very popular, and she realised, that because of that movie, she helped record, was shark hunting more popular again and audience began to fear the “bloodthirsty” sharks, as they say.When in reality, there are hundreds species of sharks, and only few of them are known to bite sometimes. She decided that she will do something about it, even though she was already old in that age, she helped a lot. In 1984, she helped campaign to make the grey nurse shark the first protected shark species in the world.The same area where she filmed their “Jaws” sequence is now a marine park! And she still makes essays defending sharks (other animals too).
I am actually really glad that I did this, I did not know about this person and I’m so glad that I have! She’s basically proving my point about the “scary sharks movies” and she’s also done something about it! Her accomplishments are amazing, I hope I’ll be able to help sharks like she helped them too. Such an icon.

This app is for mostly tracking great white sharks (there is one whale shark track, her name is Ali!).

You can track real life sharks in real time(they also have their own names,which i find very cute), you can also get to know each shark in detail (in the order they were found, who were they named by, gender etc.) you can favourite a shark so you will be able to find their track more easily, and lastly, you can search which shark is the nearest to you! (it doesn´t work too well for everyone because they only track sharks that are in america and australia)

I don´t use this app too much, but i sometimes check the whale shark track for funsies, the organization does help sharks, so why not download it? I would say the app works well, I just don´t really understand how its supposed to be enjoyable to other people. I give this app 4.5 stars.

Why we should raise awareness about sharks / shark conversation?

Sharks are very important for our environment. How? You may ask. They clean our oceans by just simply eating the fish! Keeping the balance in our marine ecosystem. If sharks went extinct, there would be way too many small fish in our seas. This would lead to messing up the balance and hurt the oceans health. Sadly, people don't realize this, they only care about the fact that sharks can somehow harm a person. But honestly, even if people knew about how important sharks are to our environment, they still wouldn't care. Because most of the population is incredibly selfish. They only worry about themselves and don't care about the earth at all, not everyone of course! For example shark conversationists! They keep fighting for sharks and our seas in general. We definitely have to spread awareness about this topic, everyone just brushes it off only because it's the "scary" sharks who can kill you, which is honestly pretty sad.
