I don't remember much from Kindergarten expect that I know my English was not the best. I grew up in a bilingual household but majority of the time speaking we spoke Punjabi.

I vividly remember 1st grade because me and my twin were separated into different classes in the middle of the year. As a child, this was a huge shift that really affected me, my English comprehension was there but I had trouble in school. And being separated from my sister was incredibly scary, which is why I remember it so well. From this point on I developed separation anxiety and general anxiety over going to school.

2nd grade was another difficult year for me especially because I felt as though my teacher thought I was stupid. I was put into extra ELD classes to work on my comprehension, reading, and writing skills. My teacher was not at all motivating or helpful, and I remember her doing a reading exercise with all the kids. I was the only one who wasn't able to read it all the way through and I just remember her being awfully frustrated with me as a child it made me feel like I was dumb and not smart. I also started to be put into summer school after this year.

By third grade I felt so much better. I had a teacher named Mrs. Maddox she made feel valued as a student. I had become better with school and the ELD classes were starting to help and improve my grades. I was doing better in school. However I do remember my home life becoming a bit disrupted. My parents weren't in the best position and were fighting a lot at this time.

In 4th grade, I wasn't the biggest fan of my teacher. She always would point out that I was wearing makeup when in reality I had eczema. I always feel like she was looking to call me out or get me in trouble although I was a well-behaved student. My grades started to fall this year and I had to continue summer school. This always made me feel inferior to my siblings because they were considered smart kids. We also took a trip to India and it was the first time I had traveled and it was the funniest time I had. Maybe this is when I fell in love with traveling. :)

It was also my outlet because my parents situation was getting worse and the fighting continued constantly to the point where my dad would be in and out of the house sometimes.

She taught me a lot of discipline and still I thank her for that. However by the time the school year was over I had find out my parents were divorcing. This was incredibly hard on me and my siblings. I still remember till this day the moment I found out.

Before middle school started my mom and siblings and I had moved to Fresno, California to live with my grandmother and grandfather. Who also lived with my aunt and uncle and their kids my cousins. I remember them supporting us throughout this hard time and loving them deeply for it. In 7th grade, we were moved to the Central school district and started at Rio Vista Middle School. My anxiety had worsened as well as developed depression from my parent's divorce and had zero contact with my dad. Also moving to a new district with no friends and our lives uprooted was a really difficult time. However, I had my twin by my side and my older brother. Family is what got me through this tuff time.

Although I remember my mom going through a hard time and working nonstop to save up for a house I wouldn't be who I am without her strength or sacrifice. We moved in and it was the first time I and my siblings started to feel secure in our lives again. Me and my sister had an incredible friend group and were doing really well in school.

In 9th grade, we attended Central West High School. At this point, I had no problem in school and was taking accelerated classes. This is also where I meet my bestest friend in the world, Simran. My parents had started contacting each other again at this point. However, me and my siblings were not very happy about this. By the end of the school year, my parents had gotten back together and my mom wanted to move back to Clovis. After talking with my dad I was happy he was in my life again however I did not want to uproot the life I already had at school. So our parents moved to Clovis and let us stay with our grandparents to finish high school in the Central District.

By this point me and my sister would drive home on the weekends to see our parents and then drive back to grandmas.

Senior year is when I decided that I would be going to Fresno State and applied as a psychology major. Teaching was always on my mind but my initial career choice was a psychologist. Senior year was great and I finished off strong. I was afraid of how college was gonna be it was something that gave me anxiety thinking about my future. I was very unsure and felt as though I didn't know what direction I wanted to go. I felt lost as any normal teen would at this age. Something that helped me when I felt lost was traveling. After graduation me and some of my family members decided to go to Cancun which I funded all by myself. I was very proud of this at this age. I just knew that traveling is what kept my soul at peace. Traveling to new places and learning about different cultures and people has been the most rewarding experience ever.

The summer before I started college me and my sister moved back in with my parents. Getting adjusted was hard at first but home felt like home. Our parents would help us get ready for college and ease our worries. Education was important to them especially because they were immigrants. That is when I decided I didn't want to do psychology even though I love it! I switched to a history major in the summer and started looking at the steps to becoming a teacher. The first semester of college was something I never thought it would be. I immediately fell in love with my history classes and knew that I wanted to teach. As the spring semester is rolling around and it's 2020, out of nowhere we were hit with covid. I still remember the day the school announced we were going to be online for "2 weeks". Then online school became the norm by the end of the year.

By the end of 2020, I had gotten used to online school. I was also an essential worker during covid. Most people were quitting however I did not have that luxury, and I still had to work. I eventually got promoted to manager and was working double the hours I had before. Managing school and work became increasingly difficult. And by the time December rolled around my great-grandfather passed at the age of 101. It was not due covid however it was the first time I had experienced death and of someone who had known me my whole life. Into 2021 I was still working 60-hour weeks and juggling online school. Covid was an incredibly difficult period in my life, into the year I had lost 2 more family members. I've never admitted it but I had some trouble with substance abuse during this time. I was constantly tired from work, school, and covid. However, my siblings were able to help me out and get me through this hard time. We had always had each other and that's something I will always cherish.

However, getting that routine back is what really helped me the most. Being engaged and sitting back in the classroom was what I wanted. Now it's 2022 and I'm in my senior year and getting back into the groove of things.
