Vitruvius’s mentality was ahead of the time he was living in. We believe that he sought to teach us what the disciplines that form an architect are. He aimed to present the role of an architect as a comprehensive master of the arts in his time as most architects are meant to be well versed in numerous fields of study. This meant that an architect’s ability stems from his vast education of many fields of study, however, even with this scholarly education, an architect was only recognized as a ‘master builder’ not as what we know them to be today. This is what Vitruvius’s message aimed to inform.

Alongside the theory, practice is just as important in the profession as it shows that the architect is capable of realizing his or her theories thus giving then authority above the builders as they are only practitioners not theorists.

I believe Vitruvius wrote his 'De Architectura' as a form of vindication of the rights, dignity and social significance of the architect. Too often had the architect been considered at the same level as a carpenter or a craftsman; Vitruvius now wants to reaffirm the status of educated professional the Architect should have. Indeed, the ideal architect is - in Vitruvius mind - a multi-sided professional who is not only acquainted with geometry and drawing, but is conscious of history, society and politics. The architect is interested not in a narrow field, but rather in the whole world - and that should be reflected in his modus operandi
