Education: I attended Shrewsbury School at the age of nine. I was not a very good student at all. In the year 1825 I went to Edinburgh University in Scotland to study medicine, but came to the realization that I couldn’t even watch an operation performed. In 1828 I entered Christ's College in England to become a minister. I gave up that idea also, so I just continued to study. I attended John Stevens Henslows Course to study plant.
