Health means to me being in a state of self-awareness of both my physical and mental health. Connecting with my physical body through exercise helps me to maintain a clear mind and an understanding of my overall physical wellbeing. Being able to recognise, interpret, and accept my emotions allows me to maintain good mental health and helps me to connect with friends and family. Being self-aware allows me to identify any areas of concern so that I can address these when needed.

E-Fit PT.

In 2021, after the withdrawal of allied military and the downfall of the Afghan government, the Taliban returned to power. This crisis saw an urgent humanitarian emergency in a country that already struggled with ongoing conflict, poverty, and food insecurity. The Royal Children’s Hospital of Melbourne (2021) stated that Australia took in over 4000 people from Afghanistan including 2500 women and children. Upon arrival The Royal Children’s Hospital of Melbourne (2021) completed health screenings finding the refugees were arriving with low B12 levels, a number of people unimmunised or under-immunised compared to Australian standards and most notably mental health distress.

The Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide (n.d) outlines a number of blood conditions which are commonly caused by depleted food stores within the body initiated by food and water insecurities. Among these conditions Vitamin B12 deficiencies were detected within the Afghan refugees in 2021, in particular children (The Royal Children’s Hospital of Melbourne, 2021). Vitamin B12 deficiency can be adjusted through oral tablets or intramuscular injections, diet literacy on how to consume B12 within a diet is recommended.

Afghanistan’s immunisation schedule according to The Royal Children’s Hospital of Melbourne (2021) missed a number of vaccinations recommended in Australia. Being that the Afghan refugees in 2021 left their homes at an expedited rate and with the covid-19 pandemic occurring at this time immunisation were an important topic and anyone with no immunisation records would be required a full renewal of all vaccinations to Australian standards. This could be assessed at the time of a health screening and an immunisation catch up plan to be established (The Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide, n.d)

The Forum of Australian Services for Survivors of Torture and Trauma (2022) deemed evacuees as “severely traumatised people”. The conflict experienced by Afghans before arriving in Australia would have been enough to trigger several mental health concerns, plus family separation and resettlement in a new country would qualify them for a mental health screening on arrival. The Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide (n.d) identified many refugees experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety and The Forum of Australian Services for Survivors of Torture and Trauma (2023) have provided specialised contacts for refugees to find clinical support in every state and territory.

The Discussion Paper of Australia’s Humanitarian Program 2023-24 (Department of Home Affairs, 2023) Australia reports Afghans as the highest number of offshore granted visa and wants to include 26,500 places for Afghans within our Humanitarian Program till 2026.

The Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide.
