2. What Causes Climate Change?

Many things can cause climate change. Here's what the United Nations (UN) listed as the main causes of climate change.

1. Generating Power
Generating electricity and heat by burning fossil fuels causes a big amount of global emissions. Nearly all electricity is generated by burning coal, gas or oil, this produces carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide which are greenhouse gases that blanket the Earth and trap the sun’s heat.

2. Manufacturing Goods
Manufacturing and industry produce emissions, mostly from burning fossil fuels to produce energy for making things like iron, cement, steel, plastics, electronics and clothes. The manufacturing industry is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

3. Consuming Too Much
Your house, the power you use, how you get to work/college/school etc., what you eat and your rubbish all contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

4. Using Transportation
The majority of cars, trucks, planes, and ship run on fossil fuels. This makes transportation a large contributor of greenhouse gases.

5. Cutting Down Forests
Cutting down forests causes emissions because when they are cut they release the carbon they have been storing. Deforestation also ruins habitats which will lead to the extinction of species.

4. Why is Ireland Not Doing Enough About Climate Change?

Unfortunately, Ireland is a small country that is causing big problems for our world. Ireland is falling further behind other countries in the EU in decarbonising the economy.

Ireland failed to meet the legally binding, EU agreed, emission targets for 2020. The target was a 20% decrease in emissions overall , Ireland only had a 1.8% decrease overall (EPA, 2020). This cost Ireland about €200million in fines and carbon credit purchases!

Why is this?

Agriculture
Agriculture is our biggest contributer to emissions (38.9%) in Ireland due to the release of greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere. Methane comes from livestock during digestion due to enteric fermentation and is released via belches and farts (National Rural Netwrok, 2023).

Burning Fossil Fuels
We burn a lot turf in Ireland, which is a non-renewable and harmful way of getting our heat.

Transportation
Ireland's public transport system is a fail! We have ghost buses, dangerous cycling conditions and poor footpaths. This prohibits our choice when travelling somewhere, which makes us rely heavily on private cars, which if not electric produces harmful greenhouse gases.

Lack of Ownership
Climate change seems to be everybodys problem but nobodys responsibility!

3. What are the Consequences of Climate Change?

Climate change affects everything. The UN said the following are all consequences of climate change.

1. Hotter temperatures

The last decade, 2011-2020, was the warmest on record! Higher temperatures increase heat-related illnesses and make working outdoors more intense. Due to increasing temperatures, wildfires can start more easily and spread more rapidly when conditions are hotter.

2. More Severe Storms

Destructive storms have become more intense and more common in many areas. As temperatures rise, more moisture evaporates, which exacerbates extreme rainfall and flooding, causing more destructive storms. Severe storms can destroy homes and communities which may lead to deaths.

3. Increased Drought

Global warming exacerbates water shortages in current water-stressed regions and is leading to an increased risk of agricultural droughts affecting crops, and ecological droughts increasing the vulnerability of ecosystems. Many people now face the threat of not having enough water.

4. A Warming, Rising Ocean

The ocean soaks up the majority of the heat from global warming. The ocean warming rate has strongly increased over the last 20 years. As the ocean warms, its volume increases since water expands as it gets warmer. Melting ice sheets also cause sea levels to rise, which threatens coastal and island communities.

5. Loss of Species

Climate change poses risks to the survival of species on land and in the ocean. One million species are at risk of becoming extinct within the next few decades. Forest fires, extreme weather, and invasive pests and diseases are just some of the many threats linked to climate change. Some species will be able to relocate and survive, while others will not. Deforestation exacerbates the loss of species.

6. Health Risks

Climate change is the biggest health threat facing us. Climate impacts are having negative effects on our health, through air and noise pollution, disease, extreme weather conditions and events, forced displacement, pressures on mental health, and increased hunger and poor nutrition in places where people cannot grow/find food. Our mental health can be greatly affected because of climate change. Climate change can cause us to feel stressed and anxious, and cause problems with our sleep (Cianconi et al., 2020).

1. As Teresa Mannion once said 'don't make unnecessary journeys'! So the next time you're about to hop into your car, think and ask yourself can I carpool/take public transport/cycle or even just walk?

2. Always use a reusable coffee cup/ water bottle, this creates less waste!

3. Start composting, it's simple and has lots of benefits such as reducing waste and can improve soil quality. Check out this link to see how to start composting at home https://learn.eartheasy.com/guides/composting/.

4. Try to buy local, organic and Irish food! This helps to cut back on pollution such as noise, air and congestion due to shipping and flying in foods.

5. Cut back on your meat consumption. Yes, this may be hard but meat consumption is responsible for releasing greenhouse gases such as methane, CO2, and nitrous oxide.

6. Sign climate action petitions. If you see a petition related to climate action read it, share it, and sign it! It's something so simple that could have huge impacts.

7. Educate yourself and others. This is a simple way to help tackle climate change. Read up, listen and watch what is going on and how you can help. Tell others, and share posts and petitions on Instagram and Facebook!
