Caught in a system few explain.

We want a place, a voice, a role —

Not just promises again.

Give us space to speak, a light to see,

A reason to trust in democracy.

Let youth be heard, let truth ignite —

Voices in the Union, burning bright.

We conducted interviews with three generations to better understand how the youth of this beautiful place are being impacted. Unfortunately, young people are leaving the village due to a lack of opportunities, events, education, and entertainment. Tourism is also limited there is only one major attraction, the castle, which sadly does not draw enough visitors to generate the income needed to invest in the youth. As a result, many locals are beginning to lose hope.

We believe that if young people had access to more events, greater inclusion, and support for higher education and if the village were further developed it would benefit the entire community and youth participation would grow proportionally.

A Creative Narrative from the Voices of Its Youth

In the sunlit streets of Brindisi, where the sea breeze whispers stories of the past, a quieter story unfolds—one not etched in monuments or tourist guides, but carried in the hearts of its young people.

“We live in a small town,” one of them says, eyes reflecting both affection and frustration. “It’s beautiful, but there’s not much for us.”

Football fields echo with laughter, and bar stools are filled with familiar faces. Beers are shared, stories are told. This is how time flows in Brindisi—slow, grounded, and always with company. But behind the smiles, there’s a quiet yearning.

“There aren’t many opportunities,” another confesses. “To study, to work—it’s difficult here. That’s why so many of us leave.”

They pack bags not just with clothes, but with dreams too big for narrow streets. Some go north. Some go abroad. Not out of rebellion, but out of necessity.

And yet—they come back.

“I lived in Spain,” one voice recalls. “But I returned, hoping to work the land, to reconnect with what we used to do here. Maybe agriculture is the future again.”

Tradition still breathes through the alleyways—festivals, music, stories passed down like sacred relics. “Culture helps us remember who we are,” someone says. “It shows the new generations where we come from.”

In this place of contrast—between leaving and returning, between old and new—there’s a thread that binds: community.

“Yes, we feel part of it,” a young woman smiles. “Brindisi welcomes everyone. It’s a good place, with good people.”

But the wish remains: “More spaces, more activities, more reasons to stay.”

This is not just an interview.

This is a call.

From the youth of Brindisi—rooted, restless, and full of hope.

5. Do you feel like your ideas are heard and encouraged by the older generations or local authorities when decisions are made about the village? Why or why not?

Voices on Board: Advocates for Change

2. Duration:

Approx. 60 minutes

3. Goals:

Promote awareness of social professions and research roles related to minorities and people with special needs

Improve public speaking and creative thinking

Encourage reflection on social challenges and empathy-driven solutions

4. Participants number:

5. Activity type:

Reflective, creative, interactive, socially engaged

6. Equipment:

Cards with social professions or roles (e.g. social worker, researcher, special education teacher, disability rights activist, Romanian community mediator), pens, paper, box for voting

7. Activity Description:

Introduction (5 mins)

Facilitator welcomes participants, briefly introduces the idea of social research, and explains the rules. The context:

A new community is being built, but only half of the people can be accepted on the planning team. Each participant will represent a profession that plays a role in supporting marginalized or vulnerable groups.

Assigning the Roles (3 mins)

Each participant draws one hidden card with a profession related to social impact or research (they cannot show it). Examples:

Inclusion specialist

Youth researcher

Sign language interpreter

Community psychologist

Romanian cultural mediator

Accessibility advisor

Mental health advocate

Preparation (7 mins)

Participants prepare a 2-minute speech where they speak as if they are that profession — but without saying the title. They must explain why they are important for building an inclusive society. Mind maps or quick sketches can be used.

Main Presentation (30–35 mins)

Each participant presents their case to be accepted onto the community team. The twist:

The others listen, take notes, and vote on which half of the group should be accepted (as on a limited-capacity “ship”).

Votes are placed in a box. Only 50% of the professions will “board” — sparking later discussion.

Reflection Time (10 mins)

Facilitators lead a reflection with questions such as:

What made some professions more "popular" or easier to understand?

Were there any roles you didn't initially value but changed your mind about?

How does this relate to real-world inclusion/exclusion of certain people or professions?

What did you learn about working with minorities or special needs groups?
