First one to knock down one of the bowling pins wins the game.

Many rounds were won not by the fastest students but by those who used the correct way to underhand slide the bean bag toward the pin. It is a fast pace game that keeps the students motivated and active.

The last person on the hitting side to get the ball over and no one catch it was the winner.

All classes were successful and I put their names on the morning announcements and that caused most of the other grade levels to try to become RockStar classes.  All but three classes in the school were successful by the last week of school.

The variation we played was if you caught the ball, you would run around the perimeter of the gym, back to team, and give clues about the location of the opposing teams’ ships. The students were motivated to catch a ball, even the ones that didn’t prefer to run, and gave their best effort just to be able to see the other side. Students collaborating/strategizing with their teammates and being active while having fun was a success to me.

The best voted games we played at field day.

I did however continue to encourage and redirect them when needed. ]]> 2021-07-20 15:50:37 UTC https://padlet.com/cucklerp/5cr0l6ruetbuk5n4/wish/1656082126 Modifications and/or Accommodations to Games https://padlet.com/cucklerp/5cr0l6ruetbuk5n4/wish/1657378893 Being an Adapted Physical Education teacher, we are constantly trying new activities, ideas, modifications, games, etc.  A couple of simple ideas that immediately come to mind are when I taped 2 or 3 hula hoops together and hung them over a typical 10 foot high basketball goal, my student was able to shoot baskets just as everyone else and it became a favorite activity for them.  It's also a great target for overhand throwing.  The other idea was putting velcro on a pinnie and on a ball for a student who had difficulty catching a tossed ball due to CP. This allowed the student to successfully catch the ball against their body with a trap. Due to the delayed arm movements and challenges of using their hands only, it proved to be successful.  The joy on the student's face was the best part!

One collaboration opportunity that comes to mind, or just a simple example of one of the many ways collaboration occurs in my job, is when I started seeing a new student.  This particular student could be quite stubborn with what activities they would actually participate in, as they wanted to only do the games/activities they wanted to do with their own agenda.  The sped teacher and I collaborated quite a bit on motivators for the student, songs they liked, favorite toys, and activities they liked to do with their siblings.  After getting the extra information, I was able to implement "First-Then" statements with the student where they FIRST performed the skill I wanted them to do, THEN they would get one of their preferred activities as a reward.  Over time, the student didn't require as frequent of rewards to work the entire session or even as many rewards during the session. This allowed the student to learn the expectations and routine of the APE session as they began learning new skills with less resistance.

Once a team caught the ball on last dot, they then had to catch from the baseline.  If they caught it, it was a touchdown and the whole team had to run to the baseline and to the other baseline for the points.  If they dropped the TD pass, the team had to start over at the closets dot and repeat.  If two teams caught TD passes at the same time, then the team who ran to the baselines first got the points.  It is now one of the kids favorite games.

The neat thing with the game is although they might know the word, they still have to make a basket, find the letter from the plastic letters and be the first team to spell the word.  What is really neat, someone who might not be as skilled in shooting the ball might be the one who figured out the word so they work together to accomplish the task at hand.

The students were able to work together both academically and physically.  The students had fun when trying to remember previous learned words while also trying to make a basket for each of the letters.  It was fun to see teams already know the words but had trouble making the ball, and also the other way around, teams could make a shot but did not know the word. After class, I normally took the time to let anyone who was planning on playing sports for school, that this games shows why it is important to do good both in academics and athletically due to the no pass no play rule.

They had plenty of practice on their own. This led to one on one competition to see who could build up and break down the fastest. If you lost you would find somebody else to go up against. Once everyone was comfortable I introduced an elimination relay. It was multi-tiered 5stacks tier one and removed a stack at each tier until it got to one stack and one stacker. They loved the speed, excitement and even the "oh man" when there was no stack for them. Each game lasts about 45 secs or so.

I wrote letters with Scrabble point values on tennis balls and placed them underneath "dome cones" to hide the letter. On got the first player would run down, lift a cone and take the ball. The next person would then go. Once 7 balls were selected, they now had the option of exchanging the ball with a new one until a word was made. We modified a protect your kingdom game to where each student stayed in their own hula hoop with their bowling pen. Instead of throwing a ball with their hands to knock down others pins, we kicked them, but students were required to keep 1 foot in their hoop. Instead of combing hoops to create a large kingdom, we played it as an elimination style game to maintain our social distancing.

A big one for us was the amount of time we spent outside vs usual. It was difficult some days in the cold and heat. My teaching partner had an amazing alternative game that had many alteration to the original game to simplify and make it successful for out large class sizes. BUT during our time apart as a team we had class sizes of 25 or less. At that time I had the opportunity to play the classic game of kickball that many of us know and love. What I learned was there are ALOT of rules and regulations that our students hadn't learned.

They knew how to kick, throw, dodge, and run the bases (from our altered game) but the basic game rules like stopping at the base, being tagged out, etc were new to them. It was fun and exciting to utilize the small sized class to dive deeper into the rules and create a successful authentic game of kick ball.

But one of the collaboration moments that gave us challenges and success was having a student teacher in our gym. Creating a collaborative plan on who was teaching what and how the lessons would work within our school was not just between me and Medina but a third party as well. We had to work collaboratively and use a flexible and open mind approach when trying out new ideas our student teacher brought to the table.
