If your investigating a crime and you talk to neighbors who tell you that the victim was a trouble maker, you may have to expand the possible suspect list. All too often, officers assigned to conduct a neighborhood canvass would prefer different assignments with seemingly more high profile or action-packed roles in the investigation, such as conducting an actual line search for a missing child, conducting a surveillance of suspects or manning a roadblock. These officers downplay the significance of the canvass and, therefore, don’t give each interview their full attention. Some officers even rush through the interviews to technically “complete” the canvass faster so they can move to other assignments.
