The advantages of using this file format to store your images with is that the format uses lossless compression, meaning when your image is saved at a different size or resized it won’t really lose any of it’s quality, unlike other file formats such as JPG. They also have a fairly low file size which means they won't take up too much of your space.

A disadvantage to GIF file format is that whilst there are thousands of different colours in our world today, GIF can only include a maximum of 256 colours, so your images may not be true to colour. These file formats can also often slow a website down if they are uploaded to it which of course is another negative aspect.
