Material World & The Circular Economy by King, Rhiannon 3

Over the course of this project I have identified a seldom recycled source of non-biodegradable consumer waste; disposable nappies. This padlet showcases my research into their recycling and my experimentation to make new materials with the recycled products.

This disintegrated the absorbent cushioning and I was left with the waterproof outer layer.

At a real recycling unit, the cleaned materials can then be separated but I don't have the equipment to do this. Some of the recycled material after this process (like the pulp) would be of a slightly lower quality but as I could not simulate this I had to accept this as a limitation in my experiments.

A method for recycling diaper waste pulp was developed. Super-absorbent polymer (SAP) in diapers was dehydrated by oxidizing it using ozone, then the pulp in the diaper waste was recycled. The diaper waste was washed and centrifugally separated, then the SAP and pulp mixture was oxidized using ozone to separate the SAP and pulp to allow the pulp to be recycled.

Sodium polyacrylate, also known as waterlock, is a sodium salt of polyacrylic acid with the chemical formula [−CH2−CH(CO2Na)−]n and has broad applications in consumer products. This super-absorbent polymer (SAP) has the ability to absorb 100 to 1000 times its mass in water--The three companies have recently developed a new technology for recycling superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) in used diapers.- Disposable diapers are mainly composed of pulp, plastic, and SAPs. Recycled pulp has been effectively used as a raw material for building materials (e.g., exterior and interior wall materials), and plastic has been thermally recovered as solid fuel. -The recycling process for used disposable diapers used to face the challenge that SAPs, which would swell from absorbing urine, reduced the recovery rate of paper pulp, or even if SAPs were recovered, they were difficult to reuse because of the significant decrease in performance.

-There are at least five different polymers in your average disposable nappy.

-The top-sheet, closest to the baby’s skin, is commonly made of polypropene. Some brands also have a thin layer of lotion on the top-sheet to protect the baby’s skin. This layer of the nappy allows the baby’s urine to pass through and into the further nappy layers below.

-The layer below the top-sheet is the acquisition layer. This layer is usually composed of cotton and polyester and absorbs the urine, moving it away from the baby’s skin. Cotton absorbs up to 27 times its weight in water. Salts and other compounds in urine reduce the amount that it absorbs relative to this figure, but it still does a pretty good job of soaking it up.

- The absorbent layer underneath the acquisition layer contains some cotton too but also contains another polymer: sodium polyacrylate. This is a superabsorbent polymer which is able to absorb a whopping 800 times its own weight in distilled water. As with cotton, the amount of urine it can absorb is reduced by other compounds found within urine. Even so, it still manages a pretty impressive 30 times its own weight. As it absorbs the urine, it forms a gel, preventing wetness inside the nappy.

-The final disposable nappy layer is the water-resistant back-sheet. Commonly composed of polypropene and polyethene, this layer prevents the wetness contained in the nappy from transferring to the baby’s sheets or clothes.

-Cotton and synthetics (polyester, nylon and acrylic) have the biggest environmental impact.
-According to Fashion For Good, conventional cotton production accounts for one sixth of all pesticides used globally, impacting farmers and local communities with harmful chemicals – a claim that is bolstered by figures from the World Health Organisation, which show that in developing countries approximately 20,000 individuals die of cancer and suffer miscarriages as a result of chemicals sprayed on conventional cotton.
-Cotton is one of the most environmentally demanding crops.
-Synthetics are not biodegradable, and they all rely on the petrochemical industries for their raw material, meaning this fashion industry staple is dependent on fossil fuel extraction.

Sample 3 (thick layer of pulp reinforced with newspaper) was easily moulded, and once dried, maintained a strong rigid shape. These properties, along with the sample's increased absorbency from leftover SAP crystals and its ability to swell when wet and cushion any produce that has broken/leaked, makes it a good option for produce packaging.
