Nick is travelling through a bleak area between West Egg and New York. He describes the town as “a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens”. The juxtaposition used describes the area as a desolate wasteland. Calling the area a “fantastic farm” brings an image of an area abundant with nature. But the only thing growing are the ashes, which grow “like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens”. Ashes are the only remnant from fires, they are almost less than nothing. While ashes represent a lack of life, while a farm should be full of life.
