Very early on in history, LGBTQ+ people were oppressed and faced with legal punishment. Same sex relationships were criminalized in many countries. People in same-sex relationships could face jail time or sometimes worse punishments. The early 20th century provided little room for members of the LGBTQ+ community to advocate for themselves so they kept quiet until the early 20th century.

One of the major turning points for the LGBTQ+ community was the Stonewall Riots. These riots began when police raided a popular LGBTQ+ bar. This raid led to several days of protests. These riots established the modern LGBTQ+ movement and led to what we know now as the "Pride" marches. After this major event, the struggle for equality was made more visible.

The AIDS epidemic had a very negative impact on gay men. This epidemic highlighted the need for improved and timely response to healthcare. The lack of reasonable governmental response would lead to groups, such as ACT UP, to take action on this issue. Because of this crisis there was more awareness and more medical exploration to the AIDS issue. It was also a voice for those who were positive with HIV/AIDS.

Over the decades, LGBTQ+ rights had received a great deal of recognition in law. Then, in 1996, the U.S. Defense of Marriage Act (aka DOMA) was signed into law. This act defined marriage as between one woman and one man. Unsurprisingly, this wasn't taken lightly by the LGBTQ+ community, so they fought back. They became more involved in their success towards marriage equality/same sex marriage, and they made history. Same-sex marriage became a constitutional right in the U.S. after the Supreme Court ruling Obergefell v. Hodges (2015).

Thankfully we can say that LGBTQ+ rights have improved and strengthened in several countries, but there are still many challenges that remain standing in others. This is especially true for transgender people and people of color within the LGBTQ+ community. Unfortunately, in many countries LGBTQ+ rights are still under threat and transgender individuals are often faced with discrimination and threats/acts of violence. Despite these hardships, the push for inclusivity continues.
