The photo competition was started to try to find ways to connect with people who may not normally be interested in science.

One of the 12 winning photos was taken by Heath Holden who captured two Tasmanian Devil joeys inside their mother's pouch.

Devils can raise up to four young at a time. Like all marsupials, Tasmanian devil mothers give birth to very tiny young (about the size of a raisin). Once born, the babies crawl up the mother's fur and into her pouch. The scientists trap devils in Tasmania to study the population and check on the spread of the fatal Devil Facial Tumour Disease. The aurora australis showed as red and yellow in the sky. An aurora is a natural light display in the sky, usually of greenish color but sometimes red or blue.
