Utilizing my areas of professional expertise  my previous employment will make me a competent professional counselor. However, I scored the same in the ‘Behaviors: Direct and Indirect Student Services’ and ‘Planning and Assessment’ area. I believe I owe this to my previous experience as a career planner and current role as an admissions counselor. Each role requires knowledge of career development for postsecondary planning. I provide students with “programs, brochures or agendas for professional development sessions in which school counselor provided training related to theories” (ASCA, 2019). Therefore, I am familiar with “demonstrating a working knowledge of developmental, learning, counseling, and education theories” (ASCA, 2019). I need to focus on “identifying appropriate evidence-based curricula aligned to the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success” (ASCA, 2019). Prior to the start a new session, I can make sure the lesson plans I have chosen to use in the classroom and group activities match the ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors, by giving them to the principal or fellow counselor to review. I can also ask one of those individuals to sit in on a session and complete a classroom and group mindsets and behaviors results report to analyze the effectiveness of the session. This report would be beneficial to the school and myself because it could improve the school counseling program. I also need to “establish and convene an advisory council for the school counseling program” (ASCA, 2019). This would be an area that I am not familiar with. Upon completion of this degree program, I plan to attend advisory council meetings and come up with a list of representatives along with their positions from the advisory council.
