"Because INBs involve copying, coloring, writing, cutting and pasting graphic organizers (plus many other activities), many teachers find that this instructional approach takes up too many classroom minutes."

I connected with this statement right away...we only have so many hours in a day, and with the curriculum and standards we are expected to cover, is there ever enough time? I honestly believe that INBs are a great way to teach new topics and review key topics, which to me, is never a waste of our precious time.

"Some students just learn differently and prefer other means of acquiring and processing knowledge."

To me- this is exactly the point of INBs! While some students rely on and are comfortable with straight recall-others need visuals-which is what this great tool provides!

"Many teachers permit students to use their INBs on quizzes and tests to motivate proper notebook preparation and completion. Other teachers value the INB as a learning end in of itself as a performance-based assessment."

What a great way to use this great tool! I strongly believe in open notebook testing whenever possible. I believe that there is way more to learning and mastering than memorization! Also- using this as performance based assessment gets students away from the boring "tests" that they are used to. Let's face it- life is much more closely related to those performance based assessments!

One of the reasons I dislike the NYS tests is that there is very little use of resources. In our info age, we almost always have access to the info--it's the way we put it all together that's important. Why not let them practice the researching of info?!
~Jenny W.
