I grew up without very good examples of feminine women. My mom was not very outwardly feminine. She never wore makeup, she dressed plainly and wasn’t girly in any particular way. My sister on the other hand was much more girly than I or my mother was, but the way it displayed itself was very negative. She dressed nicely and bragged about how good she looked and how ugly I was in my hand me downs. She had acrylic nails she’d use to scratch me with when I annoyed her. She was outgoing and popular but was catty and gossipy. I had very few connections to my femininity growing up and savored the few things I had. One such connection was through my mother braiding my hair. I had taikwondo and jujitsu practice and before I went my mom would brush and braid my hair. I felt so pretty in my done up hair. I could only enjoy that through my mom. It was something my mom had learned from her mother and passed down to me. It’s a special memory that I cherish, though my mom never thought much of it. She was just being a mom.

For my community work I want to ask women about their experiences with sexual harassment and make small illustrations to represent each of their experiences. I would like to do as many as possible and arrange them is a square on the wall.

The idea is that though each experience may be small they add up to a larger problem.
