The Helvellyn Range is an 11km long ridge, over 600m high with numerous glacial erosional landforms. The summit of Helvellyn is an example of a pyramidal peak. However, due to erosion, during the coldest part of the glacial period when ice completely covered the area. It lacks more than two corries on its flanks, hence has been less sharply eroded by the retreat of their back walls.

In the Hellvelyn range, there is a corrie that contains a tarn called the Red Tarn. This is separated from the Nethermost Cove by a narrow Arete called Striding Edge. Ice from Red Tarn flowed into the valley of Glenridding, forming a glacier large enough to create a small glacial trough. This is through the process of abrasion.

Uldale is in the north of the Lake District. It is home to the Skiddaw Slates and these are the oldest rock type in the area. It was formed nearly 500 million years ago when black muds and sands settled. Since then they have been pushed up by tectonic forces and are now found in the north and in the mountain ranges which are typically smooth.
