A very important person in the fight of Gender Identity would be Marsha P Johnson. She is a person that was afflicted with a great amount of intersectionality. She was a queer, black, trans, mentally ill stripper, but she was a large advocate for LGBTQ+ people. She was a very inspiring person, and she was dealt a bad fate because of her intersectionality. She was one of the key reasons that queer people have so many rights in America today.

One important event that happened for trans and non binary people was when Biden made the executive order in 2021. This was very affirming for the community. There are also many restaurants and businesses that are willing to incorporate gender identity terms and pronouns into their business. Starbucks has recently been giving out pronoun pins, so that baristas can feel seen. Universities have also been making it more accessible to use a different name than your given name, and the ability to change your pronouns.

Many people say that the reason that trans athletes should be banned from competing is because they will have an unfair advantage or disadvantage over opponents. In the article called "Fair Play", they discuss the story of Jay. Jay says that their equestrian team helped them get through their transition, and they were very lucky to have such a supportive group of people behind them. This has been a debated topic for years, however has not come to a complete conclusion. Another controversy is that people believe that people shouldn't be allowed to the bathroom based on the gender identity that they take on. They say that predators will use this against women, which adds a negative connotation to trans women, who are just expressing their identity.

On January 20th in 2021, President Joe Biden made an Executive order that states that "Every person should be treated with respect and dignity and should be able to live without fear, no matter who they are or whom they love. Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports. Adults should be able to earn a living and pursue a vocation knowing that they will not be fired, demoted, or mistreated because of whom they go home to or because how they dress does not conform to sex-based stereotypes. People should be able to access healthcare and secure a roof over their heads without being subjected to sex discrimination. All persons should receive equal treatment under the law, no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation." This executive order was huge, because it created a stand against governors, mayors, and representatives trying to take those rights away from LGBTQ+ people. At the time, back in 2021, many states were trying to ban transgender children from competing in sports, and going through with these bans in very harsh, unforgiving ways.

People who are affected by gender identity is everyone! Everyone has a gender identity, whether they say they do or not. Everyone feels most comfortable in some kind of way, but even if you are a cis-het person, you still identify as a cis-het person. Non-binary people and trans people are more affected by this, only because their pronouns are a deep part of who they are. They do not want to be mistaken for a different gender than the one they identify with, which is the reason that many non-binary or trans people use pins to express who they are.

Gender identity is very important. As the world progresses, people become more in touch with who they are, and how to express themselves fully. Gender identity has been around forever, however it has only been recently that we see a large push for pronouns, and other gender affirming instances being used. Gender expression is when someone dresses in a feminine or a masculine way, which has been used to confirm people of the gender they want to express to others. People want to be respected, seen, and heard for who they are.

Gender identity terms such as she/her, they/them, and he/him have been in the news for a while now. These terms have been key ways to respect trans and non-binary people. There is a lot of controversy surrounding these terms, however. From the article "a Guide to Gender Identity Terms", they sum it up pretty well. "Alex Schmider, associate director of transgender representation at GLAAD, compares using someone's correct pronouns to pronouncing their name correctly – 'a way of respecting them and referring to them in a way that's consistent and true to who they are' (Wamsley 3).
