Feeling restricted from being able to do things as a child because of how friends or family might feel has helped me raise my child in a way that allows her to do whatever she wants regardless of if it’s “for boys or for girls”. I don’t ever want her to feel she can’t do something because of her gender

childhood television shows had depicted gender through stereotypes. Lazy town - Stephanie (girl) was always finding herself in trouble and then having to be saved by sporticus (man) who played up to be a hero who does press ups whilst she was clueless and sang songs about baking.

I have a younger brother and older sister, so whilst I was growing up my brother had 2 older sisters to look up to. He was only ever interested in playing with stereotypically ‘girly’ toys because that’s what he had witnessed his whole childhood and he didn’t want to feel left out. Everyone always said he was a very feminine child, but after going to school for a few years everything changed

I have been socialised around boys all my life, went to a first school where I was one of 3 girls. Went to scouts where I made most of my friends (all men, unfortunately) and have always been into hiking, camping, etc. Interestingly, I believe because of this I struggle now to make female friends and find common ground sometimes. I now wonder if this is just because of how I've been socialised or if I've actually just gaslight myself into thinking I struggle to make friends who are women, AND is this to do with me being around men all my life.

I went to an all-girls secondary school and we were encouraged to pursue all subjects, although there was still a bit of judgement towards girls who were more 'tomboyish' and loved sports or had short hair, masculine clothing styles etc. To fit in, you needed to be a stereotypical female.
